The theme of this supplement is the performing arts, so all the spells relate to the theater, circus, songs and music, professional wrestling, and similar arts. With a theme of performance, bards learn almost all of the spells from this book, followed by wizards to represent the mental effort of the arts.
Due to the wide array of themes and actions in the performing arts, there is a great variety of what each spell does. Some allow for temporary and flashy feats of strength; others modify how other spells are cast to imitate a magic trick or mime show. There is a fair amount of illusion spells, from creating invisible cubes or a spectral stage to making pairs of creatures look like each other. For damage, the most common types are psychic and thunder to represent the mental effects of a good show and the sounds of a performance. A handful of spells have a comedic tone to them, such as tripping people with banana peels, dealing psychic damage with a cream pie, or causing an explosion of magic-resistant glitter.
