Spice Ships takes place in the 16th century, during the height of the global spice trade. Players take on the role of rival spice merchants, racing to discover new spice islands, establish lucrative trade routes, and fend off challenges such as storms and pirates. The game blends quick rounds with a mix of strategy and luck, making it approachable for casual players.
Overview:
The goal of Spice Ships is to be the first player to complete a set number of trade routes by collecting the right combination of cards. The game can be played with 2-6 players, and each game round takes approximately 5-15 minutes.
Gameplay:
Players are dealt 3 cards each. On their turn a player takes one action and draws a card from the draw pile.
The actions they can take are:
Play an Island Card: Players can place an island card face-up in front of them to represent the discovery of a new spice island. A player can only have one island of each spice type at a time.
Play a Ship Card: If the player already has an island, they may place a corresponding ship card on it. Each island requires two matching ship cards to complete a trade route.
Play an Event Card: Event cards create opportunities to disrupt opponents. For example the “Redirection" card allows a player to move one ship on the table another matching island (yours or someone else’s). The “Pirate” event lets a player steal an opponent's island and its ships.
Discard a Card: If none of the above actions are possible or advantageous, a player may choose to discard a card from their hand.
After taking an action, the player must draw one card to end their turn. The game continues clockwise, with each player taking turns in sequence.
Game End and Winning Conditions:
The game ends when a player completes the required number of trade routes. In a 2-player game, the first player to complete three trade routes wins. In a game with 3 or more players, the winner is the first to complete two trade routes.
