square consists of a rulebook and a set of 35 square plastic tiles contained in a rectangular plastic box. The game was manufactured in Austria.
The players start by taking a hand of ten tiles, at random. Each plastic tile has one of three edge shapes on each side: a square, triangular, or semicircle "cutout," or a straight edge with no cutout. The players take turns placing the square tiles on the table. Tiles are placed dominoes style, adjacent to another tile, with matching types of edges in contact.
The object of the game is to form rectangles out of the square tiles. The game ends as soon as one player runs out of tiles. Scoring is based on the number of rectangles a player formed, with points deducted for any pieces the player has remaining at the end of the game.
While a single set of the game supports play by up to three players, more can play by combining multiple sets of the game.
