Simply because the Aim-Of-The-Game in each variant is ultimately: Win And Take The Treasure!!
But they are not just pretty little shiny things, they can have a double function if the Game-Variant in which they used demand it.
In StarArena_Arcade-Chess they are used for Coin-Ups, in plain words; these coins promote your game-piece and improve their signature battle-moves. They are like power-ups in an Arcade-Game and max-out at +3 Coins.
In StarArena_TheCardGame they are used to active certain cards or functions. These type of cards cannot be played until the full combination of coins is acquired or payed.
Currently only 1 Universal-Coin is activated and played with.
