From publisher blurb:

The sky over Xalis-4 is a dull crimson, choked with ash and the fading light of a dying sun. Once, this planet was known as the Jewel of the Wahid Sector—a place where art and culture flourished, where trade ships glided between bustling cities, and where people believed in peace. But that was before the cataclysm, before the ancient ruins beneath the surface became the center of a war that would tear the planet apart. Now, the air smells of scorched earth and burning metal, the ground is scarred by the relentless march of tanks and the impacts of orbital strikes, and the only sounds are the ceaseless drumbeats of distant artillery and the groan of collapsing buildings. Xalis-4 is no longer a world for dreamers or scholars—it belongs to those who are willing to spill blood to claim its secrets. The war began like most wars do: with ambition, betrayal, and the promises of power. Four factions vie for control, each with their own vision of the future. There is Teylin’s Blade, led by the ruthless Commander Karos Avenar, who dreams of uniting the entire planet under his iron rule, turning Xalis-4 into a fortress against any who would dare challenge his command. He speaks of strength and discipline, but the ground is littered with the bodies of those who dared to question him. Then there’s The Veiled Coterie, an enigmatic group of scholars and mystics led by Ezriel Kael-Shan, a man who believes the true prize is not the planet itself, but the ancient technology hidden beneath its surface—devices that could unlock untold power, or perhaps tear open the fabric of reality itself. But these are not the only players in the game. The Scythes of Eratus, led by Captain Vala Surain, are a mercenary force with no loyalty to anyone but themselves. They’ll fight for the highest bidder, but Vala’s true aim is to get her people off this hellish rock before it claims them, body and soul. And then there are The Ashen Reavers, a faction made up of outcasts and renegades, their leader Nimael Vashtar preaching a dark gospel about cleansing the planet of all who defile it. His followers believe that he has glimpsed the true nature of Xalis-4, that he is the key to releasing whatever ancient power sleeps below the shattered ruins. Nimael speaks in riddles, his mind fractured by the things he claims to have seen in the shadows, but his followers believe him, and they are willing to burn the world to prove him right. Amidst the chaos, a fifth voice whispers through the cracks—Selana Ethis, a former diplomat turned resistance leader, who works to save those caught in the crossfire. Selana has no illusions of glory or victory; she knows that Xalis-4 is beyond saving, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to smuggle families out of the war zones, to find hope in the darkness. She has no army, only a handful of loyalists and the belief that one life saved is worth more than all the factions’ empty promises. Selana has made enemies of them all, and she knows that her time is running short, but she refuses to stop until the last light is snuffed out. The war has ground on for years now, each faction digging deeper into the planet’s shattered surface, each believing they are close to uncovering the ancient power that could tip the balance in their favor. But there is something else beneath the ruins, something older and darker than any of them suspect. A forgotten voice that stirs in the shadows, watching as the factions tear each other apart. And in the end, the question is not who will win, but what will be left of Xalis-4 when the war finally burns itself out.
