Description
A traditional Japanese trick-taking card game played with a special 97-card six-suited deck. This deck developed from 75-card Unsun karuta deck, which derived from Tenshō karuta, itself a close copy of the 48-card traditional Portuguese cards.
While Unsun karuta adds a fifth suit and three extra ranks per suit, Sunkun karuta further adds a sixth suit (arrows), a sixteenth rank (kun, くん) and a variant duplicate of a single card (the robai of hau).
While Unsun karuta survived into the modern era in a few locations, Sunkun karuta was rather short-lived.
