From the introduction:

This book is intended to provide you with a quick reference of all of the cool gadgets, weapons, and gear that exists in science fiction from movies to video games and literature. If there is a picture of it and a basic description, then we want to include it in this book. Where possible, each category of equipment is divided by the source material. That way all Star Wars equipment is kept together and all Star Trek equipment is separate.
