The Angakkuq's Bestiary

Description

The arctic is a place of vast and epic landscapes, rich culture, and bitter cold. Through generations of spoken history, a deep breadth of mythology has developed filled with monsters, spirits, and a pantheon of mighty deities. These entities build off of the interesting geography of the far north and have adapted to the environment. The creatures of these legends serve as the vessels for conveying meaningful lessons from elders to their children. A creature that lurks below the sea ice to ambush unsuspecting children who wander too close to a lead can serve as a lifesaving reminder to be aware of the ice conditions and to not stray too far from the group. This bestiary focuses on creatures from Greenlandic mythology, a place that I personally hold very dear in my heart. I hope that this bestiary serves as an homage to the stories from this amazing place and conveys a respect for the importance of storytelling in our understanding the world around us. Incorporate these creatures into your games and maybe you too will gain a greater appreciation for the frozen north.

This bestiary is a collection of 25 monster stat blocks and information about their lore. The challenge rating ranges from CR 1/2 to CR 16. These monsters can be used as single encounters in a frigid landscape or can serve as the basis for a longstanding campaign. The title of this collection alludes to Angakkuqs (stat block included) who served and continue to practice as shaman in Greenland. Historically, Angakkuqs served as mediators between the inuit people and the spirits around them. They called upon these spirits to beckon good weather and fruitful hunts and to ease the stresses of a community. I hope that this bestiary makes your games more fruitful and spark new ideas based on Greenland's rich mythos.
