The Autumn War

From the introduction:

The Province of Oak and the Province of Pine went to war at the end of the summer, but it was not until the very edge of winter when their first real battle took place in a forest at the border of their territories. Their armies, little more than militias, only a handful on either side with any experience in battle, met on a frosty morning and by nightfall, both sides were in rout, scattering through the land leaving their dead behind them for the Ugly Birds.

Now you must go among them and find the one you love, who has fallen, somewhere on the Battlefield.
