The Basics of FFRE provides basic, or quick-start, access to the rule system. The Basics of FFRE actually is the final-state publication of the rules as the full set was never made publicly available in final form. Portions of the rules found here received updates or revisions in subsequent documents, notably the Enchantment Options document.
Character creation is very freeform and the rules suggest that the players, rather than the GM, should determine how many points should be placed into the initial purchase pool for abilities.
