From the introduction:
Deep in the Homedown Gold Mine the sweat glistens on the foreheads of the miners as they toil deep within the bowels of the earth, hewing from the red hot rocks precious gold to fill the coffers of House Stentius of Herrton. Here and there an overseer strides through the work teams mercilessly beating the miners bloody with a barbed whip. Still the miners scratch the hard rock with their picks as blood trails ran down their feet from the shackles on their ankles.
