In the full-length campaign from which The Butchers of Umbrion is taken, the larger story and its wide-ranging elements are discussed, but for this free adventure, that information is not vital. It might be useful, however, to note that the premise of the campaign is the evolution of Rullaean society and the vested interests that social institutions have in preserving ignorance, contradictory to their professional aims and ethics. The themes of the campaign revolve around technology, political power, revolution, and enlightenment.
