From the introduction:
I shielded my eyes against the sun and saw what looked like the remains of a sea battle, but on land. Wrecked ships in different states of repair, turned into buildings, in some cases with driftwood houses and shacks built around them, into them, and on them, all in a confusing disarray. Here and there burnt out ruins blackened the area. It looked different from the sea, more of a dead thing, than the lively town I had walked through earlier, but the name was fitting: Broken Gallows.
