Throughout the entire history of the human race, from the primitive Homo erectus over a million years ago to the present day Homo Sapiens, the Outer Gods (Nyarlathotep, Azathoth and others) have always been worshiped, in many differing ways.

Not all worshipers of the Outer Gods actually knew whom they were worshiping. Over the centuries, the rituals, practices and deities of some cults became so distorted that for all intents and purposes they believed that they no longer followed the Outer Gods, and were open to other influences.
