The heart of the machine sits at the top of a set of stairs, strange alien ciphers carved into it’s base. A large hologram of the world spins slowly in it’s center as a grid system layered above attends to unknown activities.
Adventure Seed
One month ago the nightmares started, at first it was only the village’s children who were effected. They had trouble sleeping and would always wake crying, claiming to be tormented by horrific, deformed creatures.
If it was only one or two of them this could have been claimed to be coincidence. However night after night this occurred to each and every child of the village.
The healer of the village at first thought this could perhaps be some type of fever affecting the young but no herbal medicines had any effect on fighting off the nightmares. When help was finally sought from the nearest city, the reply was shocking.
This was not some disease afflicting just the children of this small village but something greater that was afflicting all the children of the kingdom. Soon after this, adults began experiencing these nightmares too.
Now that everyone in the kingdom is being effected by these night terrors, you’ve been put in contact with a strange wizard who will help you track down the source of this affliction and end it before people start getting hurt due to accidents caused by lack of sleep, or before anything else more malicious occurs.
The wizard explains that he believes dreams are fundamentally connected to the divine, he thinks that dreams come from a demi-plane which he seems to have mapped.
He’s able to create a portal to allow you through to this demi-plane to deal with whatever is corrupting the realm but he will be required to stay behind and maintain the portal, for if the portal was to close you may be trapped in a realm of constantly shifting reality, never to return.
When you arrive you notice shifting shadows deep below the platform where you stand and small tendrils of ebony vapor entering the holographic world in front of you. When you get closer a shadowy apparition coalesces in order to stop your advance, tormenting you with horrible visions.
What’s going on? An evil entity has made it’s way into the realm of dreams corrupting the dreams of those on the material realm to weaken the people for a greater threat that is still yet to reveal itself from the shadows.
