The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim takes place in the Nordic land of Skyrim, on the fictional continent of Tamriel, about 200 years after the events of Oblivion. At the time of the game, the King of Skyrim has died, provoking civil war amongst the native Nord race. The war is the last in a sequence of events (depicted in each of the previous games in the series) that fulfill a prophecy foretold by the Elder Scrolls; the Nordic god Alduin arises to destroy the world.
In Dawnguard an ancient prophecy, predicting the eternal obfuscation of the sun using a magic ritual with a mythic bow and a special blood sacrifice. A legion of vampires known as the Volkihar Clan, lead by Lord Harkon, seek to actuate the prophecy by performing the ritual; the Dawnguard, a faction of crossbow-wielding vampire hunters aim to counter them. The Dragonborn chooses whether to join the Dawnguard and prevent Nirn from being plunged in irrevocable night, or to assist the vampire coven with realizing their malevolent ambition.
Dragonborn's main quest line is initiated following an attack on the player, the Last Dragonborn, by cultists worshipping someone named Miraak - the First Dragonborn. The player defeats the cultists and, upon investigating them, discovers a set of orders revealing their origins: the island of Solstheim (part of Morrowind). The player then journeys to Solstheim to confront Miraak and his followers. There the Last Dragonborn uncovers a set of mysterious "Black Books", mind altering shrines, and a plot that threatens all of Solstheim.
Hearthfire allows the player character to purchase a plot of land and build their own home from raw materials such as lumber and clay, with the option of adding features such as greenhouses, bee hives, and alchemy and enchanting facilities. There are three homesteads the player can build: Lakeview Manor (east of Falkreath), Windstad Manor (northeast of Morthal), and Heljarchen Hall (south of Dawnstar). Each one requires the player to have earned the respect of the Jarl in charge of the hold at the time and become Thane, then purchase the land from the Jarl or their steward. There are options to hire stewards to look after the home, carriage drivers for quick transportation, and a personal bard, along with animals, including horses for easier transport when overloaded with various items.
