In the rugged expanse of the hills northwest of the City of Thieves many adventurers have made their fortunes over the years. The City of Thieves has many proud citizens who once explored dungeons and tombs hidden in these hills. Most citizens of the city feel that the hills have now played out. They believe that everything worth finding there has been looted already. Yet from time to time there are stories of recent discoveries there still.
Word reaches the adventurers of the new discovery of a cairn that has not previously been visited. The entrance has been mapped by a young thief named Larcen. Larcen apparently attempted to explore this cairn with his companions but was the only person to escape alive. He is seeking more experienced adventurers to make a second attempt with him. He seeks only a share of the spoils for sharing his knowledge of the entrance location.
He tells a tale of a massive underground complex with high vaulted ceilings and deadly traps. His companions consisted of a wizard, two fighters and a cleric. By the end of the first day there he was alone and fighting for his life to escape the place they had found. He tells of ghostly creatures that killed his companions. They had skeletal features and smelled of death. His clerical companion tried to turn them away with the faith of his god but was unable to do so. They quickly overwhelmed his group and he fled for his life.
