Description

There once was a road outside New Orleans - a road that lead to nowhere in particular. This road became popular as a place to be alone, for teenagers - that is, until those teenagers started to disappear. Thus, the legend of the creatures responsible started to crop up: The beasts of Grunch road, or just... "A Grunch." Said to lure in their victims by placing an injured animal near the path, these goat-legged-reptile creatures with glowing red eyes then pounce on their victims and drag them off into the swamp to drink their blood.

No one quite knows where the Grunches came from - some say they're the descendants of a village of cannibals that became reptilian because of the swamp, and because of inbreeding. Others say Grunch road once held a community of people who were ostracized by New Orleans society for being different. In an era when people were much less kind about such things, this community made a deal with the devil, asking for his help to make the locals pay for their unkindness... and the devil answered their pleas.

These sinister creatures are CR 4, have scaly, slimy skin, curving goat horns and glowing red eyes. More terrifying yet, they are said to hunt in packs, and lure victims out of the safety of their carriages using all manner of cunning and trickery.

This Monster was developed by DiceKnight Adventures' Head of Design, Joshua the Sage, in collaboration with @DevonBorkowskiArt, who did the illustration. The two travel the country working for Renaissance Faires, and in their spare time, they collect local legends and lore, and code them into 5e D&D Lore Packs, like this one.
