From the introduction:
In Zakhara, the Land of Fate, at the edge of the sands, where the trade routes meet the sea, there is a city built of spires and spices known as Fenez. Each spice merchant vies to out do his rivals in towers and minarets, in diversions and entertainments, and all of their excesses are funded by the spice trade. It is a friendly rivalry for the most part, but rivalry none the less, and as such rivalries do, occasionally turns bitter.
