The 7th installment of the Settlers takes place in a "Fantasy Renaissance" setting, and is a real-time strategy game.
As with other games in the series, the player must manage its territory, with a strong focus on the economy's production chain and access to ressources. There are now three branches of development: Trade, Science and Military. Compared with previous episodes, speed is more important, and those who wanted to take their tome fine-tuning their economy will have to adapt.
The game features a campaign (of 12 missions), a skirmish mode (play single maps against the AI) and multiplayer matches with up to 4 players. The Settlers 7 also uses stringent DRM, requiring the player to be online at all time during play (even in solo missions)
