Adventure Background
Every town has that one home that children tell stories about. The one that doesn't quite look like anyone lives there. It always looms just out of town. On a hill, or in some location that puts it slightly out of the way. Only a single person is seen going in and out of it. There are stories going back years.
This town has such a place. The Whipple family residence has been standing for well over 100 years, and it was twenty five years ago when the rumors started. The wealthy family that lived there were upstanding members of the community. They attended religious services, gave to the poor, and worked in a wealthy profession locally. Nothing really ever set the apart until the wife gave birth that one terrible night.
During the evening of a thunderstorm the child, who was told to have been a boy named Otis, was born. The other, one Anna-Mae, did not survive. The father, one Donnie Whipple, refused to allow anyone to see the child for a time. He claimed that Otis was a sickly boy, and needed great care.
Slowly over the next few years Donnie began to retreat more and more from public light. The boy was hardly ever seen except by an occasional passer-by of their home through a dirty window or such part. The home become more and more rotten over time. A malaise seems to cover the entire block, and a smell no one can exactly pinpoint the identity of, but everyone agreed is a foul one, permeates the air.
So many years later it was right around the month of Otis' birth again. Livestock started going missing. It wasn't much at first. A sheep, a goat, even a calf or two. Then the dogs and cats. Bones started appearing just outside the door of the old dilapidated home.
Then... on the birthday eve of Otis' birth... the sun never came back. Something came into the sky, but it was black as pitch, and gave an uncomfortable warmth with as little light as possible. It was no sun anyone had ever seen before. A small group of brave, but stupid boys decided to try and go inside. Human bones were added to the pile.
So now the town is looking towards the party to go and discover what happened in the home of Donnie Whipple.
