You are a bishop in the Holy Roman Empire in 1076 CE. These are difficult times for someone in your position. Emperor Henry III, a very devout man, invaded Rome in 1046 in order to resolve the squabbling of the Romans over the papal election; at one point, the factions of the rival popes were fighting in the streets! The Emperor put an end to that scandalous situation (eventually) by putting his kinsman, Bruno of Toul, on the papal throne as Pope Leo IX.
