From the introduction:

Long ago, a great king grew tired of poor performance from his knights and warriors. Feeling that there should be a way to test the worthiness of his knights and men at arms. The king designed, in conjunction with a nearby powerful mage, built a great underground complex that would test those who wished to become one of his knights. The test was originally non deadly and focused on the candidates ability to think and to defend him or herself from a variety of attackers. During the height of the kingdom, many candidates under went the "Test of King Randor". Those who passed the great test became knights in service of the king. Those who failed where sent home until such a time that the king felt they desired another "Test".
