From Inroduction:
Just as humans may grow into giants when sustained upon a diet of arcane forces — or perhaps just a superhuman excess of spite and greed — so too can the goblinoid peoples become trolls. Such power is needed to live in the wilderness alone, or near enough, and those who stay civilized may become many things, but a troll is not one of them. It is the solitude that makes them what they are: fey creatures of the wild earth, a breed of magical megafauna who walk between worlds.
In the Sakhab Wastes, a troll may become a law unto itself. And a small gang of trolls can pretty much have the run of the place, whatever place it is they want to run. What army of orcs would rather test their steel against such brutes when there are soft men upon the plains for them to slaughter? And goblins unwise enough to pick a fight with anything more than double their own size will fi nd they don’t get to pick very many fights at all.
