Description

From publisher blurb:

Numerous corporations and global tech conglomerates pursue their research into microscopic robots known as nanites. When injected into a subject, nanites follow their programming to repair, rebuild, or alter the individual’s biology. The nanites can repair shattered bones, unblock clogged arteries, remove tumors, and perform delicate procedures that are too invasive or dangerous for surgery. Nanites can reconstruct the subject’s body to the DNA level, essentially rewiring their physiology. While some nanite research seeks to improve the human condition, many such projects seek to build the perfect super-soldier.

The technology company Twilight, Inc. conducts nanite research through many avenues. One such project, Project Archon, sought to remove the scourge of cancer from humanity by using experimental nano-robotic microsurgery (ENRM). The underlying concept saw the Archon nanites being injected like a vaccine to prevent cancer; whenever cells went haywire, they would kill them before they turned malignant.

Many people viewed the rise of superpowered beings (SPBs) as a critical threat to humanity. Those with the darkest views foresaw a future where these superhumans would control the world and subjugate “lesser” humans. Playing upon these fears, a multinational corporation created an insidious, pernicious virus called the homo superior viral strain (HSVS), codenamed Stribog (a deity from Slavic mythology interpreted as “the spreading god”).
