From Inside of Book
Hey all! Welcome to my second collection of notes, this time with an aquatic theme as we take a good look at the creatures that live their lives in the water.
The world beneath the waves is a strange and alien place. When you look at the creatures that live there you really get to see how far we can stretch the word ‘animal’. Here we find animals that live without brains, skeletons that are moved by water instead of muscle, and creatures with limbs that literally have minds of their own.
In this book I haven’t focused on the more famous and glamorous creatures - your sea dragons and spiked sharks and the like. Instead I’ve tried to show some love to some of the lesser known creatures (Though I have included one famous
leviathan). I’ve spread my examples across the taxonomic tree so inside you’ll find some chordates, a mollusc, a cnidarian, and an arthropod. I’ll also say it now before I’m flooded with angry letters, the title of the book is a misnomer. Not
all of the creatures in here live solely in the sea, in fact, one of them can only be found in freshwater.
Hopefully when you read this you’ll see that the underwater world isn’t just a vast, empty space filed with nought but salt and shark teeth but an amazing, living, and changing world full of surprises. A world where the limits of
evolution are expanded. If not then I at least hope it keeps you safe.
Enjoy!
