Trailblazer: The John Muir Trail takes place over the course of twelve days/rounds of hiking and backpacking along the John Muir Trail (JMT). You will experience daily trail encounters, choose to explore destinations along the trail, acquire and manage natural and personal resources, discover and observe the sights and sounds of your environment, adapt to ever-changing weather conditions, and move along the entire trail, all while wisely using the items in your backpack to maximize your experience.
You can earn trail points in several ways along the route, such as placing workers on your tracks, collecting sets of field guide cards, scoring instantly with destination cards, and using your backpack gear efficiently.

- Destination cards — Three decks of destination cards offer rewards, patches, and gear; exploring costs resources and yields points
- Elevation track — Elevating along a track grants bonuses, access to more track tokens, and end-game scoring opportunities; faster ascent can yield bigger rewards
- Endgame scoring and sets — Final scoring blends sets of field guide icons, destination cards, patches, and multiple award tokens
- Field guide and sets — Field guide cards are collected; end-game scoring rewards sets of different icons
- Hardship tokens — Unmet requirements during hiking incur hardship tokens that penalize points at game end
- Market refresh and field upkeep — Field guides and market cards refresh daily, introducing new options and dynamic choice
- Medallions and arrowheads — Trailblazer windrose medallion and sequoia medallion, plus arrowhead tokens, drive early-round advantages and end-game scoring
