Usually a band of intrepid adventurers will undertake a quest or task for some form of reward. This reward could come in many guises; valuable experience, information, money, magical treasure...
Ahh, magical treasure.
This tome contains treasure that you can offer to your players as a reward for a job well done and the items listed will appear to be magical items or treasure that will benefit the finder. To some extent this will be true, but each treasure listed is not exactly what it appears to be at first.
Each item of treasure will have a flaw, foible or requirement that sets it apart from the usual type of treasure found by adventurers throughout their careers. Some items will need a puzzle to be completed before they can be activated, some will have limitations or surpising effects when they are used and some are trapped or cursed with the intention of causing harm or distress to the user.
After fighting past dangerous creatures, solving tricky puzzles, avoiding potentially fatal traps and completing a difficult quest the adventurers may not be expecting to be rewarded with a magical treasure that presents yet another challenge.
In the following pages you will find descriptions for many such items.
Each description will show the rarity of the item and whether or not it requires attunement. The description will also advise you what to say if/when a character casts either Detect Magic or Identify on the items. This is more important with the 'Identify' spell as the description has either been made deliberately vague or has been laced with double-meanings in order to cover up any disagreeable traits the item may have. This will be followed by a section on the operation and effects of the item and in some cases there will be an optional twist or effect that you can use.
