Description

From publisher blurb:

During her military service, Pace operated under the codename of Valiant and undertook numerous dangerous missions in hot zones throughout the world. She gained a reputation for bravery, quick-thinking, and the ability to come up with innovative tactics. When evidence came to light that she’d stolen and released classified information to America’s enemies, no one wanted to believe it. She protested her innocence, passed every polygraph test administered, and even volunteered to have a telepath read her mind. What the telepath discovered shocked them and surprised everyone else—including Pace most of all. At the start of her career, unbeknownst to her, she’d been infected by a “personality shard” from one of the most dangerous supervillains alive, a woman known as Dual.

When physicist Philip Hartman started work on Project Zerofire for Mannheim Industries, his supervisor couldn’t tell him much about the prototype fusion generator other than it was innovative and unlike anything ever seen before. As Hartman studied the generator, he realized the device wasn’t a prototype at all. Rather, someone else had built it and Mannheim Industries was attempting to reverse engineer its advanced tech for themselves. Whoever built the generator had included a security failsafe—a failsafe Hartman triggered. Although he was protected by shielding, the unknown energy still affected him and altered his physiology permanently.
