February of 1994. The Argentine military retakes power through a coup de etat. The Argentine civil government manages to find exile in neighboring Uruguay. The Argentine military issues an ultimatum to Uruguay to hand over the fugitives or face an invasion. Brazil guarantees the defense of Uruguay in the event of a Argentine invasion. Argentina launches a surprise invasion of Uruguay precipitating a counter attack from the Brazilians thus starting the war of the Pampas.
