The adventurers have been hired by Lars Karstenburg, an up–and–coming vindari merchant trying to make a name for himself in Kandar’s lumber trade, to investigate why shipments of raw timber from his logging camp in the Kraklevak Forest have stopped. After doing some investigating in town, the party learns that all does not appear to be well at the camp: Lars has been driving his workers to cut down as many Kraklevak Birches — which are considered luxury wood in the south, and are highly sought after — as possible. The characters learn of a heated argument about something happening at the camp, the dismissal of Lars’ foreman, Aldo Brazauskas, and then silence.
