Description

From publisher blurb:

Any student at the Royal Military Academy who earns a place on Strike Squad Alpha has reason to feel pride. While most members don’t feel the need to boast about their accomplishments, Chris Clark, AKA Yankee, takes the opposite strategy. He loves showing off his achievements and educating people to appreciate his Awesomeness. Clark is the youngest member of Alpha and thus has the most to prove. Fortunately for him, his ego tells him he’s already done so. His flashy powers make for a good show, and his attractive looks contribute to his image as the dashing superhero. He sees himself as the next incarnation of great heroes like Victory, and (in his mind) he’s an obvious candidate to join Strikeforce One after he graduates from the academy.

Soldiers need training to use weapons, work with fellow soldiers, and stay alive in combat. Training helps override their instincts to run and hide, which, during dangerous situations, tends to make things worse for everyone else. When it comes to soldiers possessing superpowers, they also require special training, perhaps to an even greater degree. If a soldier can hurl bolts of fire or irradiate the battlefield with their gaze, they require special training to not kill their allies or themselves out of fear. It takes a particular and determined person to train others to become soldiers. A drill instructor (DI) needs to tear down individualistic tendencies and replace them with the ability to work as a team. The DI must also teach skills with so much repetition that those skills become instinctual. A DI is able and willing to train individuals with superpowers and represents someone truly exceptional, stubborn, and probably rather eccentric.
