Merlin’s Portal to the Otherworld is the most studied yet least understood phenomena of humanity’s Dark Age. Most believe it is a rift in the veil between the Arcane and physical Realm, but some scholars theorise that the Arcane is not one Realm but many, and many versions of reality exist within this plane. This may go some way to explaining the appearance of Yldrat the Dragon, a creature so mighty in form and terrifying in presence that few have encountered it without a deep psychological impact being felt. But this sudden appearance is no unexplainable happening.
Yldrat dwelled upon Bryttania in the time before Humanity, when the continent of Europe was one large land mass and Yldrat’s territory spanned thousands of miles. The first commune of Dragons, a gathering of thousands of these mighty beasts, discussed a time when another Species, the humans, would dominate the world and the Dragon prophet Raithimar, the human Merlin, would help all faithful Dragons to reach a World capable of comfortably sustaining their number. When Humanity arose many hundreds of thousands of years later, Yldrat was one of few who still clung to the prophecy of Raithimar and shepherded the first humans from the inhospitable Ice Age and into the bright new world. When other Dragons attacked humans, Yldrat slaughtered them without mercy, certain that Merlin’s ancestors would be among those Yldrat protected. When Merlin did eventually reveal himself Yldrat became Merlin’s most trusted champion, first to enter Ranguthmar and lead the Dragon number in their promised land. Yldrat’s return heralds a dark chapter in humanity’s saga, for the Champion of Ranguthmar does nothing without good reason.
