Description

This is the 92ndin an ongoing series aimed to provide the overworked DM with ready-to run encounters.

The PCs encounter the Yool on the hill, an animated snowperson corrupted by tainted snow. Will the PCs become kings of the hill, or will their blood turn the snow red?

The base encounter is CR 3.

Decades back, an adventurer returned to her home village of Armonk bringing with her piles of gold and a magical hat capable of transforming a pile of snow into an animate snow person.

While this snow person, who is called “Yool”, can be a formidable foe, it is usually a good-natured creature. For decades, the village celebrated the Winter Purchasing Holiday by using the hat to bring Yool back to life. Yool would preside over the holiday and the mayor would remove the hat just before it became too hot for Yool. Unfortunately, things have gone terribly wrong this year: a villain placed skull fragments from a lich into the snowball that formed Yool’s head. When Yool was brought to life, the presence of the fragments deranged their mind and Yool became a dangerous monster. Using some vestige of the lich’s magic, Yool uprooted a small tree and enchanted it into the Yool Log, a magical great club.

Fortunately for the villagers, the corrupted Yool is obsessed with being king of the hill. This is a strange amalgamation of Yool’s playful nature and the lust for dominion that still resides in the fragments.

Whenever they see someone from atop their hill, Yool bellows out a challenge for combat. The villagers are, of course, dismayed by this.
