War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time® - Give me a heavy Euro!? - Kickstarter Critique Review
Transcript
Tube, I'm back again today for another Kickstarter critique. We're going to take a look at a different Kickstarter tabletop game project every weekday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Give my honest thoughts on how the project is being run. Also, quick show note, if you want to support the channel, we have a current Kickstarter going right now in the links down below. $30 gets you Kickstarter critique and it helps send me to Origins Gen Con and shoot 105 videos about board games. It just helps out the channel a lot. But, right now, I am legitimately excited to see why War of the Dragon, The Wheel of Time is the 10th most popular project on all the games right now. I feel like it probably should be higher and I imagine they would probably agree. So, clearly, something's probably not going as much as they'd like it to or maybe they don't have stretch goals. Looking at the main image, terrible start. Hey, there's some animated characters from the the book. Neat.
Uh doesn't tell me if it's a board game per se on the front. It doesn't tell me the pieces, the components, the mechanisms, the player count, the time count, the age, the prices, the expansions, the stretch goals. It tells me absolutely nothing except, "Hey, we're here." Terrible main image. First board game adapted from Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series from the award-winning publisher of Dune Imperium and Clank. Now we're talking. Now we're talking about some hot games that are connected from the people who designed those games are making this. I feel a little bit better. I still have love the player count, the time count, the age. Is this a solo game? I imagine it's going to be. Just a shot in the dark being a Wheel of Time book. But, you told me so little. Terrible main image. Just atrocious. I hate it with all of a passion of a million suns, but they have $686,000.
Of course they do. They have a Wheel of Time game. Good for them. They got the IP. Let's see why people are clicking. Let's see 3,400 people have decided to give them money. Let's find out why. As always with the video, I'm thinking three things. Do I want it? Can you do it? How much is it? Let's go. 48 seconds. Wow, that's not a lot.
The wheel rises once again.
You've already wasted 10% of that. You've wasted 20% of that.
the beginning
This is terrible.
You've wasted 30%.
Because there are no beginnings, no endings.
wasted 40%.
Is this a Disney game? Is this a pirate game? God, this is bad. Seriously, you told me that in the description. Right? Like I don't need Like that's great. That piece of information. I don't want to diminish that. I think there's a lot of people won't read that, they'll see it on the video. That's great. But 20 seconds ago perhaps, cuz we're already halfway through and you have done nothing. Oh, what a waste. Yeah, I get it. The guy made the books. He's like, what is We're 30 seconds into a 48-second video and you have done nothing. Told me absolutely nothing that I could not have just read from the terrible description you have underneath your game. So bad.
a beginning
is it a board?
Let the dragon roar.
Oh my god, it's a board. Look at that. IT'S A GENERIC LANDSCAPE THAT PROBABLY LOOKS LIKE THE map from the war of the dragons. This video is so bad. That Yeah, okay. That feels like you made a teaser video about a year and a half ago then you forgot to plug it in here. That's what that feels like. That video is terrible. Third of a I'm just going to go two-thirds of a boy gray bump down from the main image, the description, and the video. You have done nothing. Nothing aside from let me know, "Hey, we made a game and it's for people who have made some other good games. And it's officially licensed." That's all you've done. Terrible start. Just Oh, okay. So, Dire Wolf. And I don't know they're known for like their apps, if I recall correctly. So, okay.
So, no, no, they did they did Clank, too. Obviously, Big Cash Cab, fantastic deck building uh done is a press your luck game. Played a couple times, really enjoyed it. 539,000 bucks. And then let's make sure people got their stuff. I'm sure they did because this is one of their cash cows. Along with I think doing digital implementations as well. I think they have like an arm or something that does that. Have you received my game in the US? How can I follow up with you? I still haven't seen mine either. So, 3 days ago, 3 months ago, same question, same answer. At least they're consistent. No answer. But, let's play my favorite game, the poor customer service game. You forced my hand at 3 months. When's the last time they actually came in here and said anything about their project which ended, oh, I don't know, less than a year ago? Wow. Let's go with the poor customer service game. I'm going to guess 5 months. 5 months, which would put it back to January. I'm going to guess after the new year they just went silent.
I backed the all-in bundle, still haven't received. Here we go, 4 months ago. All right, I said 5. I'm off. I've used the metallic cubes in only two games, they're already getting damaged on three black cubes. Sorry to hear that. Go to here. So, they were 4 months ago. So, it's about 4 months ago. And then they were just like, "We're out." You know what most people do when they want to do this and be lazy and not check this? They post a pinned comment. It's easy, it's simple, it still looks lazy, but it puts all of the pressure on them. Every single thing. And all you have to do is get in here for 18 seconds to type, "We are not monitoring this as often anymore now that the campaign has shipped out and please send things to this email and we will get you in a timely manner, blah blah blah blah blah." That's all you have to do. Everybody else does it except for you and other people who like to look and play the terrible customer service game.
So, 4 months, not great. Um, and it could be easily solved with just a couple keystrokes. And this is from 2023. So, yeah, we're good. But, still from 3 months ago, 5 months ago. So, at least they're up here updating. That's nice. All right. So, can you do it? I'm pretty sure they've done more than that, by the way. But, yeah. Yeah, I'm not worried about it cuz I'm pretty sure these people are like, "Hey, I thought it shipped out." Yes. Pretty sure people got their stuff. The fulfillment Europe sent my order to the Netherlands. So, yeah, this was 5 months ago. If people are getting stuff and it's shipping issues, that means yeah. So, can you do it? Is a yes. It looks like they've actually shipped out their stuff as well, which is nice. So, can you do it? Yes. Do I want it? In no way, shape, or form have you convinced me that at all unless I'm a Wheel of Time fan. And if I'm a Wheel of Wheel of Time fan, I still feel like you have done nothing at all aside from acquire this IP to get my money. So, let's see what changes going forward. All was shattered and all blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Okay, hey, it's a shot Wow. SO, ONCE AGAIN, I GO BACK TO how much I hate everything I've seen here. And this image right here is cooler and more useful, in my opinion, than everything that you have wasted your customers' time with up till this point. Why isn't this shot on the main image? Why isn't this shot on in the video? Like, you showed me the most generic-looking map. Show me the board, the area control-looking board. Show me the screen dividing the two things representing something from the game, you know, from the story. But instead,
we have we were we got Oh, and miniatures. Once again, I go back to that main image. Why not throw the minis in front of the art? You want to showcase something, showcase the minis cuz those look like really nice minis, especially if I'm newer to board games. Okay, both game modes. Oh, so there's two game modes. Epic mode for two players. The scope and the stakes both increase. So, why wasn't this in the video? Like, come on. This is just Okay. There are two ways to fight. The War of the Dragon Hero mode, recommended for newer players, and Epic mode, where you take control of massive armies. Hero mode, for up to four players, sees the Dragon of the Dark One gather the most trusted allies in the kingdoms to complete missions and assert control over congested regions, which is not the one which is the one they recommend for two players. So, up to four players. But then everyone wants to play the the really fun mode, For Epic mode. That one's primarily for two players.
Got it. Each round of players take turns playing cards to take actions that generate resources, recruit new Yeah, this board looks fun. Like I wish we could have zoomed in on this player board. I wish you would have decided to do that instead of whatever it was you chose to do in the video wasting everyone's time. Like that looks awesome. I want to play that game and I have next to no attachment to The Wheel of Time at all. Like I said, I've read the first few pages of one of the books about 12 to 26 years ago, somewhere in that time frame. That's mine. Uh I also think like I I once almost considered watching the TV show. If that, you know, just so you have the full picture. What is this? Is that a rondel-looking system? Wow, that's way more interesting than everything else I've seen up to this point. So, once again, you have tons of Like that looks cool. That looks like Splendor-ish, like set collection, but with special abilities-ish. That looks like an awesome player board. Everything you've shown me, once we got up into here, has been great. We have a standee version. Once again, this would have been great to mention in the video because now I know there is a deluxe version, there is a standee version.
I've set myself up for a higher price point. All these things you could have done instead of that garbage teaser trailer. Uh War of the Words, The Wheel of Time. I mean, I really wish this told me what it was. It's a preview. Cool. Neat. Rulebook and resources. Excellent. Could you get a quote out of here? I know you were too busy working on your animated video that did absolutely nothing to help anyone could be convinced to buy your game, but could you at least get a quote from here so I could know what they said or what they liked or what was different or what was unique or what made it special or what made it feel like it was deeply Wheel of Time. And I go back to why this is tenth in popularity. Cuz you're not selling your game well. And I know it's the dog days. It's like, all right, we've hit the wall, we had our first bump, but still other companies find ways to get around this. And you have a beloved IP. 339 comments.
That is terrible. Like you're not getting people engaged unless they're it update. They might be in the update. In FAQ 21, please tell me you upgraded the Oh my gosh, please tell me you organized that. I hate this page. I hoped I was going to like it. I had low hopes honestly based on the main image and just the hey, we have this thing, come on in. Which is like the worst way to sell your stuff. War of the Dragon Wheel of Times is offered here in two editions, so you can choose the one that's special for you. Yeah, I get it. Deluxe standard. We have gone shopping on Kickstarter most of the time most people have and this is actually it's going to be fun to see the community and see how many new people they bring in on this. Right? Because as a board gamer I'm not feeling it at all. Maybe I have to go through the previews, maybe I have to read through a rule booklet, but I shouldn't have to. Let's check out the back of your rule booklet. Hopefully you utilized it wisely. Okay, it's fine. You utilized it cuz that was you ran out of space. That's Oh, no, it's a setup.
Excellent. Oh, setup, playing the game, check That's a great back of the rule booklet. I have I am excited for the game now more. How many pages was it? 27? Just took a stab, took a guess. It was Uh is is it is it our number 23, 24, 25, 26? 26. It says 49, but we know it's 26. Okay. Or is it 49? Cuz you just said here it was 20 20 You said your page 22, but this one says your page 45. What? One. This is confusing. So this is page four and it says page four. This page 13, it says page nine. Are you throwing in extra pages here? I don't know. Any who, 90 bucks. It doesn't feel good.
Like first impressions, that doesn't look like a $90 box, which is probably why you didn't put the box in the main image. And if I'm paying $90, I I'm kind of expecting there to be some form of minis, you know, maybe it's like oh, four, five, six minis, something. Especially from a company who's made quite a few games before. And yeah, this just feels like a bad price and I know they had to pay to get the IP, but there's tons of companies that pay to get tons of IP. That's the game now. Everybody's like after the IPs of the 10-year 5-year anniversary of stuff. And this feels like a terrible price from the jump. Also, you didn't have a featured pledge. I don't know why, but it'd be nice to do. 123, so a $33 price jump gets me plastic minis. Wow, you know what would be nice? Letting me know how many plastic minis. Is it three? Because you're showing me three, and I can't imagine that it's three. Maybe, oh I don't know, more information about your pledge area would be useful. But probably not. Probably because they're just banking on everybody getting this stupid $289 one.
Which, I got to say, if you didn't have Wheel of Time, I don't think there's any way you're getting people to buy that pledge, because that is more than double, and I feel like you have not even sold me on an $80 game. Like I think 80 I'd be like, all right, maybe. But I don't like how many games can I play this? Is this a campaign? Like I know there's two different modes, but it just feels like one's the baby's first mode, so you can play the epic mode with just you and your friend, you can kick out two people. Which I don't know if that's necessarily what's going on, but that's the gist I get. So let's see how they convince me to give them 140 extra dollars. It is card sleeves, neoprene playmat, a map art print, which that would have been nice to showcase in the in the main like you showed a map, but I didn't look at yeah. And then the component upgrade pack, which comes with these, which we put at the most unappealing angle we possibly could find.
Okay, hopefully they sell it now. Now, we're on to add-ons. Campaign exclusive, two promo ally cards, six bucks. Wow, $3 a card. What a What a bundle. The component upgrade pack. Oh wow, it's 40 bucks. You've got me nearly. I just need to feel the other 120 dollars. Right? Cuz it's a $166 price jump. There's 40 of it, so I need to fill the other 126 in those play mats and card sleeves, which once again, you've done a piss-poor job selling because you haven't slapped me in the face with how many cards there are. If you told me there was a thousand cards, I'd be like, "Okay, now I understand the price a little bit more, but I'd still be struggling to fill in the remaining hundred dollars." These prices all feel terrible.
And maybe that's just cuz you sold your games so poorly. Or maybe they just feel bad. Uh map of the Westlands art print, $50. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Cool. It's a 2-ft by 3-ft art print that I could go print out at Kinko's for less than $50 and have it here tomorrow. And I know that's like it's different because it's from them and you want to support the cause and stuff like that, but they're just gouging. Oh, the neoprene play mat, which we're not even going to tell you the size of or fully unroll it. Cool. Yeah, there you go. There's your value. There's 90 of it. There's 140. Look at that. It's a deal. Actually no, that we still have an extra $26. So, even if I'm just looking at the prices, which once again, I feel like your prices are terrible because okay, that doesn't look like a there, whatever that is. That looks like a cardboard pop out. And that looks like a super generic coin that you got off Alibaba. Like Ah, card sleeves. Okay, there we go. Custom card sleeves. Now you're getting me there. 60 bucks, but how many? 500. Okay, it's a number that's larger.
Uh honestly, 500 cards does get me more excited about the game. And I go back to that. Did they tell me how many cards there were? No, they just jump right into the price. They're like, "Yeah, you love War of the Dragon. What more do you possibly need to know? Give us this money." I'm going to guess. I'm going to honestly, I don't like to say I hope that companies don't sell their most popular pledge level. I feel bad saying that, but I legitimately hope they did. I hope that they got slapped in the face by the market and the most popular pledge level is this $90 one that doesn't feel good. Now, I don't think that will be it cuz I imagine it's going to be the minis one that doesn't feel good because you have to showcase those minis in any way, shape, or form. Like, "Oh, hey, there they are. How many are there?" Uh 200 pictures, cool. I don't care. Created by humans, nifty, swifty, whatever. How many minis do I get in the pledge? Are you serious?
I That is We're done. We're done. You didn't even give me the amount of miniatures in your game. Who is running your Kickstarter? Because they clearly do not like board games. Like, I Like, I I'm going to check. I legitimately am so honest. That is such a terrible page. AND WE'RE DONE. THAT'S IT. THAT'S ALL. DID WE GET SHIPPING EVEN? Did we even have a shipping section that I just glossed over because I was so annoyed at everything? Oh, here it is. It's Oh, it's a clickable one. Because we couldn't put the graph here. That would be too easy. If you gloss by Okay, so shipping. Here we go. East Coast, Midwest, Rocky Mou- You live in the Rocky Mountains? What? Where is that entail?
Where does it cut off? You have broken America into six distinct locations. That's not industry standard and I guess And here's the bottom line. It should be right. Like, they're like, "Yeah, if you're here, we actually don't need you to pay as much for shipping." This is actually a nice thing. It just Everything else about this page just I I don't even want to compliment it, but I will. I actually kind of like this even though you should be more descriptive about where these areas are because really, you know, if you're on the East Coast, you're paying a little bit less. Now, your price still feels garbage just from sh- sea to shining sea, none of these prices feel good when you backed your in the base game, but just for the game itself, and I'm assuming I'm in the I'm not in the mid- I'm in Indiana, which I guess you're you're Are you lumping me in the Midwest? I'm certainly not East Coast.
I'm certainly not Rocky Mountains. I guess we're the Midwest. You know, a lot of people say Indiana, you're not in the Midwest. Whatever. So, I'm at $102 to $105 for this game, the standee version. If I wanted to go up to the minis version, it'd be an extra $30, but I don't want to do that because I don't know diddly squat about the minis. It looks like you have three minis, which clearly you probably don't have three minis because I can't imagine that you would gouge your customers so hard to go with $10 per mini, and then maybe this is it. Maybe this is the minis. Maybe there's eight minis. I don't know because you didn't tell me because you did a terrible, terrible, god, you know, to quote to quote one of my favorite books to read to my kids, a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Kickstarter presentation of your game, and you got what you deserve, I feel like, because this is this is not fun. There's no stretch goals, and it's not fun. Like, it's not fun to go in this as a Wheel of Time fan and be like, "Oh, hey, one of my favorite series is coming to life."
Like, you have a preview video, you have a rule booklet, you have a bunch of not good prices, and yeah, holy crap. That was not a fun experience, but let's check out the rewards. Let's see if I'm just complaining about nothing, and a bunch of people still got the most expensive pledge level in the world because that's what people like to shop on Kickstarter. But, I'm going to I'm predicting one to one, roughly one to one on the first pledge to the third pledge. The last battle bundle. Oh, they did have it as a feature pledge. I take that back. I didn't see it. I mentioned that a little bit earlier. And it is uh 1496 people. They still they And this one actually does it more decent job of selling it, I kind of. That does not look like a $289 bundle.
In fact, no, I'm not going to say that. That I have seen many ways to convey your major play. One card sleeve, that's a choice. Like, why not put 500 or something like yeah, that is hmm. But 400 1500 people like I love Wheel of Time. I don't care. I have disposable income. I read books. Obviously, I have disposable income. 187 bucks. Uh not sure. Okay. Uh $90. So, okay. Never mind. I'm not even close to one to one. That one dominated the other one. 10 to one. Good for them. No, it's not 10 to one. It's five to one. And then the One Power 1390. Okay. That was the one that's much more one to one and in fact, damn close. If you combine this and that, it's actually the deluxe is being out sold by the two under the deluxe, which once again goes back to show you that you did an absolutely atrocious just one of honestly I'm not being hyperbolic here.
That is one of the worst jobs I think I have ever seen a company do of trying to sell the deluxeified version, taking into account the amount of information on the stuff you're trying to sell me, taking into account your graphics, taking into account your god-awful price. Like I don't even know how many minis I am paying for. Like and that's the only upgrade here. Right? Do I Can I click on it and find out? Let's see. Does it say in here? Maybe? Fewer? 123. Yeah, that feels not great. Uh okay. So, this is for the what No, I don't want to add these. No, I thought they were terrible the first time. I don't want to add them now. Yeah, I don't think it tells you. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Not not ideal. All right. So, yeah, let's check out the updates comments this god-awful FAQ, which hopefully is organized at least.
You didn't just make me read through 20 questions. My question's number 20. Yep. So, my question's number 20. I have to read through 20 questions. Thank you for not taking the time to organize this like reload from Colossal Games. Why crowdfunding? What Whatever. I I hate this page. So over this page. Epic mode preview and draft rule booklet. Great. So it wasn't there for the first two days. Wow. Thanks for finally putting it in there. I'm glad they did Yeah, like I'm not like I'm serious, but I'm not at the same time. Like, "Yeah, maybe maybe launch for that." Mhm. Take a look at the epic mode and gives you way more to experience the full saga. Additionally, we've heard your feedback and received a number of requests to release the work in progress rule booklet so you can all dig in on your own. Oh, you weren't releasing it.
Yeah, I always use this expression incorrectly and I'll apologize if I do it again, but I really hate the cut of dire wolf's jig. Holy God. The fact that people have to pound on your door to get the bare minimum, which is a rule booklet for your $90 overpriced game. Wow. And there's no stretch goals, either. Like, I was expecting there to be a bunch of stuff that was going to be unlocked throughout the process and that's why this price was so terrible. No, it's just because you did a terrible job selling your coins, your card sleeves, your game, your minis. You did a terrible job selling every aspect of your game, but thank goodness you have the Wheel of Time. Thanks for doing the bare minimum, Corey said in a nicer way. Hate to be that fan. This doesn't make sense. The game's supposed to start with the Shadows Rising. Okay, so now we're talking about theme stuff and yet they have to make gameplay choices because whatever.
Having those doing the figures read the books looks like repeating the mistake the Unmatched fan fic with show that these are the hardcore fans. Like, then this is what I'm talking about. This is why I feel like that 339 under comments is you doing a terrible job getting people engaged. And I know you're a weekend, but these are people who have no problem reading thousands upon thousands upon thousands of pages about something they love and you could just easily get people engaged in these updates in these comments. And I I can't imagine at 3:39 they are. Is it So, in fact, are they even they There they are. What's the exact play time per game? Check the BGG link. No. No. No. No. No. That's the kind of stuff THAT SHOULD BE ON YOUR MAIN IMAGE, BUT YOU'RE NOT DOING A GOOD JOB. IT IS SAYING TO YOU LIKE, "HEY, WHY DON'T YOU JUST GO TO THIS LINK THAT I couldn't be bothered even post here." And now I know it won't be clickable, but still wow.
Man, I want to check out every Dire Wolf project in the future just because this is so like I'm hate watching. Dire Wolf, where did you go? It's been 4 days since your last reply according to Kickstarter's comments. There's a lot of questions and concerns. People are looking for clarification on Hopefully, communication improves as we go along. Thanks. Yeah, you got $686 million. And let's be quite frank, if you played your cards right and I told you this ended at $3 million, would you be shocked? No, I don't think you would. If I told you at the beginning of this campaign War Wheel of Time on Kickstarter board game from Dire Wolf, the people who made Clock, the people who made this and the legacy Clock legacy made $3 million on this campaign, I don't think you'd be shocked at all. So, sitting here where we are now, I can't help but say you did everything you possibly could to make this uninspiring and boring. This is 48 seconds of wasted time. Your description does one thing good, and that is mentioning that it's from people who made good games.
And it's just boy, howdy, this is a terrible page. They got back to me early, or I think just a couple of days off. The journey plans of having third parties do a review of the gameplay while the Kickstarters running. I would love to hear a couple more opinions on folks who have played a demo before I go all in this game. Yeah, that's what I said earlier. Quotes. Like you have a preview. At the bare minimum, get a quote from that. Or if they didn't give you a quote, which most likely means they don't like the game, which, you know, that's some behind-the-scenes sort of stuff, then ask them for a quote. They will be like, "Wow, the amount of player variety on the action cards means that every game you're going to have a different path to victory." Or whatever, right? But, the fact that people have to be like, "What's the it's what's the time on the rule booklet? We'd love to see a true solo mode.
We're looking for some into some options." Wow. Yeah, I know we're a week into our Kickstarter campaign, but we're thinking about pumping out a solo mode for you losers. That's what that feels like. And that is that is wow. I want to really pause right here before we get into this final grade because I have not had that feeling on a campaign in a very long time. That used to be a much more common feeling on Kickstarter campaigns that the solo mode just feeling like an add-on, RIGHT? YOU COULD NOT HAVE GONE ANY more out of your way to make the solo mode feel like just Yeah, maybe we'll look into a slapping that sucker on before it hits the Like, that on top of the fact that you're like, "Yeah, rule booklet, I guess we can put it out there for you."
Wow. Final grade. Do I want it? No. I do not. As someone who is not a Wheel of Time fan, you did a very atrocious job of convincing me that I wanted this. Now, from the perspective of someone who's a Wheel of Time fan, I also feel like you did a very atrocious job of making me want this. From an uninspiring main image to an uninspiring description to an completely nothingburger of a video that does nothing more than waste 48 seconds of your time to a price that does not feel good and you don't explain to me why I should want this by showcasing components or anything by the fact that we had to ask for a rule booklet, by the fact that the solo mode just feels like it's going to be slapped on if you even get it. No stretch goals, no unlocks, no exciting things, just the bare freaking minimum.
In so many different aspects and it's it's just it reeks of not Kickstarter standard and just hoping because we have the Wheel of Time we can do it and they did. They got $686,000, kudos for them. They got the IP and that's all you had to do. So, do I want it? Yeah, if I'm a fan, maybe, but not for that price. Doesn't feel good. Can you do it? Yeah. You're You're You're asking for $120 to make that game. Okay? So, yeah, I think you'll have plenty of money to make this incredibly unimpressive game from a manufacturing perspective. I'm not trying to insult this game at all. I'm just saying there are some components there are some parts of games that cost more to manufacture and there is nothing here that really looks like it's that expensive to manufacture. This I would imagine is just a cardboard pop-out that you construct. Like, this is not a $90 game.
And it damn sure doesn't feel like a $120 game. And it, oh my god, punch me in the stomach does not feel like a $289 game. So, how much is it? Feels terrible. Can you do it? Doesn't feel good. And do I want it? Is no and no. So, final grade for War of the Dragon of the Wheel of Time, I'm going with a D. And honestly, you could probably talk me into a lower grade easily. Be like, man, that Forest, that video. What was your favorite part of that video? And I'd say, oh, it was when you mentioned once again that these are the people who made good games." That's the best part. Like even when you revealed the map, it was a terrible map reveal. Like it did It could have been a play mat. Could have been like a cool un-scrolling play mat or something.
