TDG: Clank!: Catacombs - Underworld
Transcript
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the discriminating gamer. You know, I've got some bad news. My half brother and I aren't allowed to play with the chainsaw anymore. Ladies and gentlemen, today we're going to go ahead and take a look at Clank! Catacombs: Underworld from Dire Wolf.
Clank! Catacombs: Underworld from Dire Wolf is a new expansion to your game of Clank! Catacombs. You're going to have some new tiles, new tokens, and some funky new rules. Let's jump right into it and take a look. Now, the big addition to this expansion is the underworld. So, this is kind of a new level that you can explore in Clank! Catacombs. Now, essentially, there'll be some new uh regular tiles that you will shuffle into the top part of the deck, and as you uh explore, you'll find kind of these passages that lead to the underworld. When you go to the underworld, you're going to put out uh the underworld uh tile, and you're going to put in and the appropriate side tile to it. It's kind of a pentagon and you've got five different or I think there's seven different potential kind of side tiles that you can put next to it. But you're going to put a side tile next to it and go to that location.
And then you're going to go ahead and explore the underworld. Now the underworld has some new treasures there, some new high stakes, different things you can get there. But what's kind of scary is if you begin a turn in the underworld, you have to spend an underworld coin. Now this is another feature of the game. Here and there you will be able to get underworld coins. It's a special kind of currency. So you start your turn there in the underworld, you have to pay an underworld coin. If you don't have an underworld coin to play in, you gain two clank. Now as I say, there's various rooms that open up with with these ladders that can take you down there. There's even a shoot that can take you down there. And once you're there, there's also a portal that you can portal out of the underworld. Now there's also an underworld guardian there that you can fight and defeat. And he kind of guards these artifact enhancers. And when you defeat him, you can go ahead and grab an artifact enhancer. And of course they are the first one you can get the most points, whatever. But they essentially allow you to multiply what one artifact is worth so you can gain a lot more points.
Now you also have kind of a new market board. You have special underworld market items that you can only purchase uh from the underworld. You have fate rooms. These fate rooms have a crescent moon. You go into these fate rooms, you can draw a fate card. I think you can draw two or three and pick one you want if I remember correctly. Um but these fate cards will give you special ways to score at the end of the game or other goodies. But you can only have one fate card uh throughout the game. You also have harpies um that can appear on the board. And when you go in, you got to fight the harpy. But then they also kind of become a trophy, give you benefits again toward the end of the game. There are some other tile effects. You have underground lakes. If you go into an underground lake, you can just trash a card. You have tower rooms. The tower rooms have a boot on them, meaning if you start your turn in a tower, you automatically get one boost. So you automatically will get one movement there.
So, there's a lot more. There's new cards, more new tokens. Uh there is just a lot that this game is uh this expansion is bringing to your game of Clank! Catacombs. We'll get back to the review in just a moment. I want to take a minute to ask you to check out my other channel that is Cody Carlson, PhD, where we talk about history, books on history, military history. I even post some of my uh lectures for my classes on there. Please check that out. Please subscribe to that channel. And now, back to the review. So, that's basically what you get in Clank! Catacombs: Underworld. Um so, we we went ahead, we played through this, and I'm I'm a big fan of Clank! Catacombs. I love how you are as you're moving through this world, you are opening up new and and and interesting rooms, and you get to do fun and interesting things. I like the how this game is procedural procedurally generated. I like Catacomb you know, I like the original Clank! But, Clank!
Catacombs is to me light-years better, because I love seeing the board expand and evolve. It's so much fun. And I really like Underworld as an expansion. I really like this idea of there's another level you can go to that's even deeper. And if you get knocked out there, zero points. You can even go deeper than the depths. And it's fun, because it's scary. You know, you want to make sure you got plenty of these undead coins, so that when you start turns down there, you're not going to be getting all this Clank! Um but, it's just another way to go that's even further, where you can gain like another artifact that's down there that's a high-value artifact. And then, as I say, you've got the guardian, and you get the artifact enhancers, but there's just other goodies and neat and interesting things you're encountering down there. Really had a lot of fun with Clank! Catacombs. I think this is um you know, I I I I I think I'm going to play it a couple more times before I make this determination, but I I I'm almost prepared to say it's essential.
That I would I want to play with this every time I play it. I still got to think about that a little bit, but I really I'm really thinking this is going to be the definitive way to play under uh play Clayton Catacombs with me with the underground expansion. So, it's a lot of fun. Great new content here. Great new cards and rooms and abilities without sacrificing gameplay. And that's that's what a good expansion does is it brings you more and if there are more rules, it doesn't really hamper what makes the original game fun. So, I really enjoyed underground. Had a lot of fun with it. On the Cody scale as an expansion, I'm going to go ahead and give it an eight out of 10. Really got a kick out of it.
