The Cursed Cat Solo Playthrough | New Scott Almes Game from Button Shy! | DaniCha
Transcript
Hi everyone, Danielle here. I'm doing a preview of an upcoming Buttonshy game called The Cursed Cat. This is a solo game designed by Scott Alms and it says development by Jamie Thu. Um, so keep in mind this is this is a prototype. Things are subject to change. Um, but this is a fairly quick game to learn, I think. Um, so you'll get 18 cards, which is, you know, typical for most Buttonshy games. You're you're going to get three location cards. So, we have um a lab, we have a spell book, and we have a portal. So, as far as setup, you're going to put them in a specific order from left to right. So, the leftmost location will be the lab, and then you'll have the spell book, and then you'll have the portal. I'll just kind of put this right here. Um I do have this pretty zoomed out because cards will be uh laid on top of it. as you'll see in the columns. Um, and then I'm going to give this a quick shuffle.
And these are double-sided cards. So, we have this side, which is going to be considered the monster side that has a number on it. Um, they all kind of have a different uh monster on it. That's fun fun art for those. And then on the other side is considered the spell side. So, these are going to be spells that we'll be able to uh cast on our turn to manipulate where these monsters are in our um in our game. So, we're going to give this a shuffle and we're going to play on easy mode. So, what we're going to do here is we're going to put four monsters into the lab.
We're just going to fill them up from left to right. And then we're going to put two monsters into the spell book. And then lastly, into the portal, we just put one. And since I am playing on easy mode, I'm going to discard two cards off the top of the deck. So that'll be in my discard pile. But then um in the meantime, we also have to order the cards after you lay them out in the columns. So you're going to look at each row and you're going to sort them in descending order. So uh looking here, 15 12 that is descending order already. I'm going to put the 14 to the left. We're just simply reordering the rows at this point.
And then we're ready to start. We draw three cards into our hand and these will be the spells. and we'll c we'll have a a deck of spell cards that we'll always be able to look at. Um, so we know that levitate is on the top of the deck. And this one says, "Choose a column with two or more monsters. Move that column column's bottom monster to the top." So that'll make more sense once I go through what you do on your turn. So on your turn, you can do up to two relocations. You can relocate a monster from the top of any of these columns to another column, but you have to follow the rule that the monster that you're moving the value has to be less than the value that the monster is going to go on top of. So, for example, if I wanted to move this nine, I could move this nine on top of the uh the spellbook column because this value is two, I'm sorry, 12. But I cannot move this nine to the portal because this value is two which is less than nine. So that's one of the uh major rules when it comes to relocation.
After you relocate up to two monsters on your turn, you get to cast a spell. And this is something you have to do. The relocation is not something you need to do. It's optional. But when you do take your uh casting a spell action, you'll either play one of your spells in your hand. Uh, right now I have Vertigo, Crushing Hand, and Titanic Clash. And also I get to look at the top card of the deck. So I get four options at the start of the game. As you continue through the game and use spells from your hand, you don't actually refill your hand. So you do have to kind of be smart about how many cards you're going to use from your hand because then that kind of dwindles down the amount of spells available to be used on your turns. You don't ever refill your hand in this game.
All right. So, I think we're kind of we're just going to get started. How to win the game is if every monster that's in your uh player play area is in the portal, you'll win the game. So, we need to somehow get all of these monsters out here all into the portal. And right now, we only have this one in the portal. So, that's how we win. We will lose the game if we run out of cards in our hand and the deck. Okay. So, I'm going to do a relocation. And I'm going to move this nine here. And then this two over here. All right.
So, that was my two relocations. And now I can look at what I want to do in terms of casting my spell. So, Vertigo says, "Choose two vertically adjacent monsters with a size difference of five or less and swap their positions." Crushing hand says, "Choose two vertically or horizontally adjacent monsters whose sizes add up to seven or 15. Discard the smaller one." In a Titanic class clash, choose a monster sandwiched directly between two adjacent monsters. Discard it. So, it's probably best to try to describe something that has a lower value. Um, I think I'm going to use Titanic. Uh, actually, I'm going to
choose I could do levitate because it gets kind of this higher number out a little bit. So, I think I'm going to do levitate. So, choose a column with two or more monsters. So, lab has two or more monsters. And I'll move the column's bottom monster to to the top. And anytime there's a gap, you just move everything down to fill that gap. And so that was the first turn. So now on our second turn, we get to relocate up to two monsters. And just so you know, if for some reason we cannot complete a spell, but of course you do have to cast a spell every turn if you can't end up fulfilling it completely, you only get one relocation on your next turn. So you kind of have a penalty there. Um, so I get to move twice. And I think I will move this 14 to the portal cuz you can move it to an empty column.
And then I'm going to move the nine to the 14. Oh, over to the to the portal. That'll be my two relocations. So now at the top of my deck, I have bind. Choose two vertically adjacent monsters. Move them to another column as if they were a single monster. You must follow the size rule using the sum of their sizes. After the move, treat them as two monsters once again. Oh, that's very interesting. H. So, I could potentially move these two cuz this is basically a total of six. And I can move it here. And
yeah, I think I'll do bind. I'm going to put these two cards move them here because the there are value of six which is less than nine and I have now casted bind. Okay. So as far as relocation I'm going to move this 12 here and then this eight here. I think I think that was fine. So, we have an empty spell book right now. All right. So,
I could do a vertigo. Choose two vertically adjacent monsters with size difference or less and swap their positions. H. Let's take a look at the top of the deck. Cower. Choose an oddsized monster smaller than an odd-sized monster directly above it and discard the smallest odd. I don't think that works right now. We have only two odd ones and they're 15 and nine and one's in the lab and one's in the portal. So, that won't work. Um, we could potentially do Vertigo. So, Vertigo or Titanic Clash. Choose a monster sandwiched directly between two adjacent monsters. Discard it.
I guess I could discard. Yeah, I'll discard the four. So, this is sandwiched between two adjacent monsters. Yep. So, I'll discard this. This will come down. Okay. So, now we get to do some more movement. I'm going to move this two to the spell book and move this eight to the portal. That was my two relocations. I really only have three spells left and I have to move these monsters over. So, let's see what we can do about that. I don't know if this is going to work out. But, we have crushing hand. Choose two vertically or horizontally adjacent monsters whose sizes add up to seven or 15. And I don't that's not going to work. We don't have the numbers to do crushing hand. So I'm going to just h choose two vertically adjacent monster size different swap their positions.
And this odd one won't work because we don't have H. These spells are tough. I don't think we're going to be able to to complete anything but vertigo. So, let's complete vertigo. Choose two vertically adjacent monsters with size difference five or less and swap their positions. I will swap um
trying to think. Would it make sense to swap the eight and nine? Because none of these numbers 12 and 15 is tough to deal with because they really needed to be in the portal by now. Uh yeah. Um, I guess I'll just move this like that. Okay. And then on my next turn, I'm going to relocate. I'll have to
think. Yeah, I'm not going to be able to win this. Going to move the two here. Move the 12 here. Goodness. Okay. Um, so now I have cower and crushing hand. I won't be able to do cower at all. Nothing adds up to seven or 15, so I won't be able to do any. So, I'll just go ahead and discard this. I can only do one relocation. I'm just going to move this here. Move this here. Definitely don't have the cards where I need them. And then my next turn, I'll be discarding this basically because I can't even complete the spell. And then I have uh nothing left to do. I have everything empty and I've lost the game.
But in an ideal world, I would have had these three monsters in the portal and that's how you would win the game. Um definitely a fun fun puzzle. You're kind of like uh hoping that you have spells that you end up using in each game. you kind of have different spells because obviously some of the spells will be out as monsters. Um, so it's it definitely feels like a different game every time. Um, but yeah, this is a a very easy what maybe I played this within 10 minutes, I think. Um, so definitely an easy one that you could bring out um as you travel around or even at work or something. Pull this out and just play a quick game of uh the cursed cat. All right. Right. Well, I hope you enjoyed this uh quick playrough of The Cursed Cat. And uh thank you so much to Buttonshy Games for sending me a preview copy of this one. And if you're interested in supporting Buttonshy Games and purchasing this game, definitely take a look at the des description. I will have a link uh to learn more about it. All right, thanks so much for watching. Bye.
