Oopsy Poopsy: My Favorite Mechanism
Transcript
Hey, I'm Jamie and this is Walter and we're going to talk about our favorite mechanism in the game Oopsy Poopsy, a light card game that I played at Geekway to the West and had a great time with. So, Oopsy Poopsy is a game about building a tableau of cats. You're trying to have five cats in your tableau and things you can do some things in the game to distract other players and also to try kind of solidify the cats that you have in your tableau. It's a very light game, but I think the lightness fits the theme well and fits the mechanisms well. Here's what it looks like. There aren't a lot of images on BoardGameGeek, but here is one of those images showing a few of the cards. They have really adorable names, really adorable art. And there's a lot of take that in this game. Like there's a lot of direct interaction where you are either distracting an opponent's cat with I believe it's fish or toys, I think are the two things that distract them.
Um and if you do that, if you distract them, then then it prevents the player from seeing from from counting that as a cat in their tableau. However, and this is I think is my favorite mechanism in the game. And sometimes you actually you can even lure cats away from another player. You can distract them so that they come to you, which is really neat, too. But I think my favorite thing about the game, this is a clever little mechanism that the designer put in there, is that certain cats are immune to certain distractions and you can kind of see one in the kitchen in the in the photo here. So, this particular cat says that they will not chase a mouse. So, if I have a mouse card, one of the main cards used to distract other players' cats, I cannot place it on this cat because they're immune to it. And actually in the edition that we played, not only do we see this image, but I think there's like kind of a an an image in the background that signals that this cat is special that you can't play fish onto them, which I thought was a clever graphic design choice.
But I really like this. I like that there are certain cats that can't be distracted. They're obviously more valuable to play. You want to play that type of cat. Um but it it feels good to have some in your cat some cats in your in your tableau that are protected from those types of distractions. Uh, yeah. I was a delight I it's it's a very light game, but I appreciate the time and thought that the designer put into it. The designer also stopped by to say hi to us as we were playing the game, which is all always nice to see at a convention. And um, really I was delighted, you know, I love cats. I have a cat um, and I'm I'm delighted by games that use cats in fun whimsical ways. And Oopsy Poopsy definitely did that. And also great name for a game. Like who doesn't want to say, well, I'm sure someone doesn't want to, but it was fun that it's fun to say the name Oopsy Poopsy and to talk about Oopsy Poopsy the game with other players. So, congrats on that as well. Those are my favorite things and mechanisms about Oopsy Poopsy. Let me know your thoughts if you played the game or if you have played another cat themed game where the whimsy of it comes comes through in the the art, the names, and or the mechanisms in that game.
Thanks.
