Hanafuda Large-Format Edition Koi-Koi Gameplay Overview
Transcript
Hey everyone, I'm Jessica with Pencil First Games and I'm so excited to tell you more about our Hanafuda large format edition deck and specifically the game of Koi Koi that's included within it. If you're familiar with our previous deck, we created one that looks like this in this nice box and there's also a limited edition version with red cardbacks. This is the large format edition which is in kind of card format. And if you want to see the comparison in size, this is what an original standard size Hanafuda card looks like. And this is the new large format edition. You'll also notice that there are set icon symbols on these cards to make it easier to understand what those sets are. Also included in the talk box is a rule book that includes the rules for the two-player game of Koi Koi along with the Wandering Visitors variant that we added in and a fantastic solo mode by Bruno Cthala.
You'll also find these two reference sheets which are used again for two-player games of Koi Koi. Each player will have one of these and they show the months that are available in the game on one side so you can kind of follow along and see what's matching up as you create sets and then the other side has all of those different sets along with the scores and how you would actually create those. So we are so excited about this. It is again beautifully fits inside this tuck box on these amazing beautiful cards with Vincent Tutra's artwork. And I just want to go in and kind of ch show you how to play Koi Koi, which is the common game that is played with a Hanafuda deck and the rules that are included. So, let's dive in and learn how to play Koi Koi. Koi Koi is a two-player set collection game, and I have it set up here with kind of the community area in the center. These are my cards, a deck of eight, and my opponent would be sitting across and have their cards. You'll also see that we each have one of these really nice reference sheets, which one side of it when we pull it out here is going to have all of the different months along with set icon reminders about what we can find across those. You'll see that they all create individual panoramas for those months, which are really beautiful with Vincent's artwork. The other side is going to show you what sets you can create and score points from in Koi Koi.
So, this is a nice reminder just to keep nearby for each player. So, you can always reference that and see how you are going to potentially score points. So, on a turn, what I would do is I would have all of my cards here and be able to take a look at them. And we'll look at these up close just to again look at that really beautiful artwork and the fact that I have these icons on the cards so that I can easily find them, but they don't really detract from the artwork in any way. They're just nice reminders, especially when you're learning the game. So, I would then choose a card from my hand in order to play and possibly capture something from the community area. So, if I have a card that actually matches three, let's say there are, if you see here, there are three from the same month out here and I have the last one in my hand. If I play that, I actually get to capture all four cards and those would move into my scoring area. So, that's always an exciting time when that happens. Now, if for instance, I played this card instead, you'll see that there are two matching ones. However, I would only be able to choose one of those. I wouldn't be able to take both, just one if I played that one. And then, let's see if I actually have another matching card in my hand. I do. Or if I played this one, I would capture this card plus the one matching one. I could also play a card that doesn't match anything to add it to the community area because this can have more than eight cards. There's a couple
of neat strategies that you might try out. But for instance, let's say that I wanted to do that really cool move and I am going to play this card right here in order to capture those other ones. So I still have my hand of cards. I'm just going to place it off to the side slightly and then these would all move into my scoring area. And again, the nice part here is that I can kind of keep track of the different icons that are out there and potentially look for those sets really easily at a glance. At the end of my turn, I would then flip over the top card from the deck of cards that hasn't been used and look at that and see if that matches anything in the community area. It actually does. These two are from the same month. So, I would then be able to capture both of those and those would now go into my scoring area. At this point, it's now my opponent's turn. The community area sometimes has less cards, it sometimes has more, and it kind of goes back and forth until somebody creates one of those sets that I've mentioned before.
And when that happens, you can either say game over, so the game ends immediately and you score those points, or you can call for koi koi, which means come on, and you keep playing in order to try to make a better set for yourself, in which case you'll then score points from all sets that you create. or your opponent might actually beat you to it and at that point they would be able to double their score from whatever set they created and end the game. So there's a little bit of a push your luck and risky situation going on there. But that is basically how you play Koi Koi. And typically you will play for 12 different games, but these are pretty quick back and forth. You can also shorten that up and play less rounds.
And at the end of it, you add up everybody's score to see who is the ultimate winner. And again, it's just a beautiful, beautiful deck to enjoy with all of these different cards, all the different artwork and creating those sets. It's just a lot of fun, especially when you are flipping over cards and not sure what might come out and finding those perfect ones that you need to win. That is everything that's included in the Hanafuda large format edition box and how to play Koi Koi. Hopefully you're as excited about this version of the game as we are. Thanks so much for watching and take care. Bye.
