Expanding provinces, flying ships, industrial facilities being built one after another. It wasn't long ago when they were running dirty pipes in back alleys, but now you've become the owner of a company with a team of employees and a fleet of ships. With the dream fulfilled, this is just the starting point for a new destiny. Campania is a highly interactive euro that plays up to six players, where each player aims to have more killer gold than any wells at the end of nine rounds. There are three different types of resources that players will be dabbling in: machines, electricity, and crystal. Each player will have a set of colored dice that represent the ships used to transport your workers. The pip number on the dice are used to indicate how many workers or player cubes will be sent to each area during your planning phase. At the beginning of each planning phase, a new tile is revealed, which is a new location with a special power. Players will then secretly choose how many player cubes or workers to send to different locations by allocating them with their dice behind their player screens. The number of workers that you can place up per round depends on where your cube is on the sum of all cubes dice track. Once all players have completed their dice placement behind their screen, everyone reveals their shields and put their cubes on the matching areas on the main game board.
What happens next is that after all the cubes have been placed, each tile is resolved to see who has the majority of workers there. Players with a majority or a tied for majority get to resolve the action there. Players who don't leave their cubes there for a future round. Think of it as an investment in your future actions. The different actions on the tiles might allow you to gain more resources, draw building card, increase your maximum worker output, convert one type of resource into another type of resource. There's even a compartment that doubles the amount of current resources that you have. If players use the construction action, players can build their building cards into their play area by paying the building cost. Players can create building extension by using the same type of card, thereby stacking the different of building effects. This makes a single building more efficient at making killer gold. Players can also place a cube on an investment tile which gives them a permanent game ability.
It's the interplay between the different characters, the area control of your worker places on the different locations on the main game board that really creates this indirect, tense, and suspenseful gameplay experience. I guess you could say that your companions are your competitors.
