Evenglow - Teach & Playthrough

Before You Play Aug 5, 2026
Transcript 49:49

Hi everyone, my name is Monique

and I'm Naveen from Before You Play

and today we're going to be playing through a game called Even Glow.

Yes, this game is designed by Jason Catsinkle and published by The OP, who are helping sponsor this playthrough. Now, in this game, players are going to be taking on the roles of alchemists who are tending to their two gardens. We have a sunlight garden as well as a moonlight garden. We're trying to plant various plants into those gardens, grow potions, and ultimately score the most amount of points.

That's right. This is a tile laying game for one to four players that plays in about 30 minutes in which each turn players will need to plant two different plant tiles to both of their gardens at the same time in mirrored spaces. But the catch is that each different type of plant scores in a different way. And so today, as per usual, we are going to start with the teach of the game and then go straight to a two-player playthrough. If you'd like to jump around, we'll include timestamps in the description below.

Now, if you could do us a big favor and turn on your cling on subtitles if you make mistakes, we can add those corrections there or in a pinned comment. And lastly, if you like these kind of videos and you want to see more in the future, please consider subscribing.

And with that, we are ready to begin. So, if you please jerk your attention to the center of the table, we're all set up here for a two-player game of Even Glow. Welcome to our gardens.

Yeah. Sunlight, Moonlight.

That's right. Now, like we're mentioning, in this game, we are alchemists. And so, over the course of the game, we are going to be trying to brew potions by first planting these six different types of plants in each of our gardens. Now, each of the different plant types requires a specific orientation on your board in order for them to score. As an example, the lion's mane plant scores three points for each set of exactly three tiles on your board. The vines and leaves, on the other hand, will only score if they are part of the largest connected set of tiles in each garden. And so, as you can see, we are going to need to pay close attention to these various orientations so that we can maximize our points for each of the different plants. And at the end of the game, the player who is able to score the most amount of points via these different plant tile configurations, as well as the three different types of potions we're going to try to make will win the game. Now, the way the game works is each player will start the game with a plant card in our hands. And we're going to keep these cards secret and starting with the first player and going clockwise. On your turn, you'll play your plant card face up to the draft board. Now, each plant card shows a combination of four different types of plants. And each turn, all players will be able to plant two plant tiles. And so, as the active player, you'll orient your card to determine which two plants you get as the active player and which two plants everyone else gets. And so, as an example, if it were my turn and I wanted the lion's mane and the vine tile, I would orient my card like this, and I would get one of each of these two types of plants. And everyone else would get a headbain flower as well as an elderberry. And this is all done

simultaneously. So there really is no sort of waiting on each other to take these tiles. Then players must place one tile in one garden and the other tile in the other garden. And it is up to you to decide which tile goes where. But keep in mind that both of your gardens are mirrored. And so when placing these tiles, you'll choose a numbered space. And so as an example, if I wanted to place this vine tile here on space number 13, then I would be required to place my lion's mane tile on space number 13 in the sunlight garden. Just like that.

So yes, as you can see, both gardens are mirrored relative to each other.

And once all players have placed all of their tiles, then you discard your card and draw a new one. And then you move on to the next player. And technically, you're supposed to pass the draft board around to the next player so that you always know whose turn it is. But since we are playing a two-player game, we're just going to leave it here and sort of just play a card whenever it's our turn.

And so that's essentially how turns work in the game, it is really quite simple. Now, as for the plants themselves, like we were mentioning, there are six different types of plants in the game, and they'll all score in different ways. In addition, three of these plants will also brew you potions if you are able to place them in specific configurations on your boards. So, let's talk about them. Starting with the vines and leaves. Vine tiles are these green ones. And at the end of the game, they will score you one point per tile in the largest connected set of vine tiles in each garden. And these tiles are considered connected if they are attached by at least one of the adjacent branches. And so in this example, these two tiles are connected. So if this is the largest connected set at the end of the game, then they'll score me two points total.

And again, that's per garden. So not only here, but also as you grow out here, whichever is your largest, you'll score there. As for the blue leaf tiles, these sort of rely on the vine tiles because at the end of the game, these tiles are going to score you two points per leaf that is connected to the largest connected set of vine tiles in each garden. And again, that's two points per leaf. So, because both of these leaves are connected to this largest connected set of vines, this tile will score me a total of four points.

So, it's very important to make sure you try to place these leaves on that largest vine so that you can actually score them. As for the other four types of plants, they require a specific number of tiles in their set. So the henbane flowers requires exactly a pair of flowers next to each other like this. If there were a third touching this pair, then they would score nothing.

It would ruin it.

But each set of exactly two adjacent tiles will score you two points at the end of the game. And if neither tile is touching the perimeter of its garden, then you'll score an additional two points. So right now, this pair is scoring me four points. Lion's main tiles will score you three points for any set of three adjacent tiles in any configuration. Similarly, the mandrekes require four tiles and they'll score you four points any configuration. And finally, we have the elderberries. Now, in order to score this type of plant, you need to have exactly five tiles in its set.

However, the way in which they score is dependent on how many of that grouping is actually adjacent to the perimeter. So if I have something like this where I have exactly five tiles in its grouping, this will only score me three points because only three of the tiles are along the perimeter. And that's generally how each of the plants score. Now the last thing is that like I was mentioning, each of these three different types of plants will also create potions for you if you place them in specific configurations. For the lion's mane tiles, you need to have all three tiles in a triangular configuration anywhere in your garden board. So, if I'm able to do this, then I immediately brew a potion. And when doing so, you'll place a harvest token on that configuration right in the middle to show that these three tiles are now locked. They'll still score me three points at the end of the game as long as I'm able to maintain their configuration by not adding additional tiles to it. But as you'll see, some of the potions will allow you to move or rearrange your tiles. And the lock tiles are locked. You cannot move them anymore for the rest of the game. So now that I've created this configuration and harvested these tiles, I automatically brew this potion. And for the lion's mane, they allow me to brew the essence of undo potion, which once during the entire game, I can use this potion to swap the positions of any two unlock tiles. And at the end of the game, it'll score me three points regardless of whether or not I use the potion.

Another thing to note is you can actually swap between your two gardens, so you're not just locked down to one garden. And you can also swap same type of tiles if you need to reorient things. So that can be very useful, especially for the flowers and the vines.

Next, we have the Mandre tiles, which brew a chaos elixir. And in order to brew this potion, they just have to be configured in a straight line. So either horizontal or a diagonal. And the chaos elixir says, "As a turn, you can plant a tile from the active player side and a tile from the everyone else side of the draft board." Which means when you use this potion if, for example, the active player oriented it like this, and you don't want to take these two tiles, you can choose to take one of these two and one of these two as long as one of the tiles is still one of the ones that were on your side of the draft board. And these elixirs will score you four points at the end of the game. Finally, we have what the elderberries brew. And this is the tincture of transmutation. And unlike the other two potions, it doesn't matter what the orientation is of the elderberries. You just have to have five adjacent. So they just have to basically be scoring. It's hard enough to get five of the same type of tile. Yeah.

And so this potion allows you to replace one of your unlocked tiles with another tile from the supply. You

just swap it out.

Just swap it out. It's exactly as it says. And these will score you five points at the end of the game. The last thing is at the end of the game, you'll also score three points for each set of one of each type of potion. And you can score multiple sets if you have multiple of these cards.

And by the way, you score these points whether you use or don't use these potions.

And you can actually use these potions on any player's turn. It's just one potion per turn. And that's essentially it. So, we'll continue taking turns this way until either one of the plant tiles has been completely depleted, which will probably not happen in a two-player game. Yeah. or as soon as the last card in the deck has been played at the end of that turn, then we will go into final scoring. We'll score points for all six of the different types of plants in both of our gardens. We'll score points for each of our potions and then of course for each set of potions that we have. And at that point, whoever has the most points wins. And in case of a tie, the tied player with the most potions wins the game. And that's essentially how you play Even Glow. We're going to go ahead and get cleaned up and we'll get started with our playthrough.

Okay, we are all ready to go. We each drew one plant card, so we know a little bit about something that we can put into play. Uh, we also had to figure out who was going first because we had to seed the board.

Yes, during setup, we drew a seed card and depending on player turn order, each player was required to place two specific tiles on their board on a specific space. So, this seed tile, since I was the first player, I was required to place a vine as well as a Mandre tile on space number 18. And again, these boards are mirrored, so they are the exact same spaces on each board. We got to decide which tile went where. So I decided to place my vine on my moon board and my mandre on my sunlight board.

Very good. So, uh, for me, I had to do a mandrake and flowers. So, I put my flowers in my sunlight and my mandre in my moon. We'll see where I go from there.

Yes, we will see. All right. So, I'm going to go ahead and go first. And again, on your turn, you'll play your plant card to the draft board, orienting it so that you choose which two tiles you would like to place. So, this is the active player side. Um, and this is Naveen's side. So, I'm going to orient it like this, which means I basically get one of each of the two types that I already have. So, a vine and a mandre. And Naveen gets a henbane flower. I wasn't really ready for this one.

And you also get a lion's mane. Okay, these are all like I'm like randomized in your uh specialized. Yes.

Okay, that could work out for me, though.

And then you'll technically place your tiles simultaneously, but we'll just go in turn order.

Sure.

So, I'm going to place my vine tile on my moonlight board. And I'm choosing space number 13. And I think I'm going to orient it like this just so I can leave my options open. Now, once you place a tile, you're no longer able to orient it. So, once you set it, it's there. Um, unless you brew a potion, of course. Now that I placed that there, I am required to place my Mandre on space number 13 in the opposite garden. So now I have two Mandre tiles adjacent to each other.

Very good. All right. So mine uh I have to be mindful of my card that I have. So because Mon'nique doesn't know what she she has not drawn her card, but I know what I can orient myself going into my turn.

So I think I can do something here that that that's useful. I get to choose where I want to put this. Uh, I am going to put my uh I'm going to put this on number six. So, I'm going to put the uh the lion's mane on six here. And that means this flower hen mane has to go over here.

Okay.

All right. There we go. Interesting. I know.

So, again, henbane flowers, you want two that are adjacent to each other, not touching the perimeter if you really want to maximize them.

Um, as for my mandrekes, I could put them in any orientation, but what I really want to do is put them in a straight line. So, I'm looking at space like 8 and 22. if I want to make a potion.

Right.

Anyh who, that is it for my turn. So now I'm going to draw a card and I'm going to discard this one. I'm just going to discard my cards off screen so that we can keep track. And technically, you're supposed to pass the draft board to the next player. We're going to keep it here for the whole game.

Try to be smart.

We're just going to alternate uh taking turns.

All right, I'm ready to play. So I'm going to take this card and I'm going to put this towards me like that. So I'm going to get a vine

and another lion's man. Okay, cuz now Naveen is the active player.

No, you can deal with those two.

I get a henbane and an elderberry.

Get those elderberries started.

Yeah, it's kind of nice doing that early.

Okay, so knowing that I want vines attached to flowers.

Yeah.

Uh I'm going to want to do something like this most likely. And knowing that this is a dead end because of this flower here.

If I don't want to do any potion stuff, I'm going to put that there. I covered up space 12. Okay,

so that means I did something right here because that means this 12 is now one more here and I get that potion.

Yes,

that's what I want.

Essence of undo.

Exactly.

All right. As for me, it kind of stinks because the hen bane flowers don't want to be along the perimeter, but the elderberries do.

Yeah.

You know what I mean?

You can set yourself up.

Yeah.

For a fiverr,

I guess. So, so I'm gonna place this here. 77.

Okay. And

they don't have to touch. You can start somewhere else.

I know. But I mean, I just want this to be inside. Yeah.

You know what I mean? And I don't want to block the path of my Mandre my Mandre uh pairing here.

Fair enough.

All right.

All right. So, that's it. So, I'll discard off. Let's go ahead and draw.

All right. Then it goes to me and I'm going to play my plant card like this. So, I get a vine and an elderberry. May I have an elderberry, please? Which means Naveen gets

a leaf

and a and a mandrake.

And a mandre. There you go. All right. I think I know where I'm going to place mine. I'm going to go uh vine on 22. And I know that I'm not going to be able to connect vines that way. So I guess it doesn't I guess what if I move this out of the way?

Yeah. I'm posting this is like definitely not happening. So Oh, I guess it doesn't matter either way. It just has to be connected to this. Then I'll do that.

Okay.

Because it must be connected to this vine if I want it to be scoring. Okay. And then this has to go on 22.

So now I have this one along the perimeter.

So now you're really reserving these for your mandre.

Eight and four have to be my my mandrekes.

Hopefully they show up.

They better. It's so early.

They better.

All right. Where you going to put yours?

You know, I don't like this combination here because this needs to be here on 11. Yeah.

I don't want to I don't want flowers budding into flowers. That's a problem.

That's a problem,

right? Cuz like every one of these connected to your largest is worth two points.

Yeah.

So, the problem is when I look over here on this moon board, this 17, that's great,

but that's not great for the flowers.

I know. It's a great little pairing.

It's not a good pairing. Not for me at least.

It's a conundrum.

I know. But it's scoring at least something right now. If I can move it later, I'll move it later. So, I will do the 17 and 17. Oh, okay. Interesting.

It's kind of bummer. Bummer-ish.

Why don't you rotate it so that 11?

That's true. That's true.

Right.

There you go.

So that you have an option to place a vine there and then it'll be

The goal will be to play. Yeah, exactly. Very nice.

I mean, yeah.

No, that's good.

Yeah, because this one's not going to score either way if it's there.

It's too much maneuvering.

Yeah. All right.

I only have one potion. Yeah.

I'm going to draw a card and discard this one. Now it's back to you, Nibian. And by the way, the number of cards in the plant deck is based on the number of players. So, in a two-player game, there are 20 cards total, so it's going to be 10 turns max each.

All right. Uh, this combination is almost what I wanted, but it's not what I wanted. So, I'm going to play this here.

Okay.

Uh, that is what I'm going to get. So, a vine and an elderberry

for me. And then you get a Mandre.

Are you jealous?

I wanted it.

And a handb. May I have Mandre, please?

Yes.

Oh, that's great.

I know you have it working on your side. Actually, it's it's gray.

Yeah, it Yeah,

it's it's just okay.

It's just fine.

All right, we're going to place yours.

So, knowing that I want to get this going here.

Mhm.

Let's try to make I want to make it so that this is like this so I can wing out. Oh, but I need this to connect. This is tricky. All right. It's going to have to go like this. There we go. Cuz that was like a broad side that wasn't going into anything anyway. But I wanted to connect this flower.

Is it number six?

Uh that is number 11.

Oh, sorry. 11. So my whole like mandre or not mandrake, my lion's main thing here, but I can make a lion's mane three here. Yes. A seven. So

just any triangle.

Yeah. So that means now I'm working a little something here.

Okay.

I got to figure out how I'm going to do it. But there you go.

And again, you don't have to make the triangle. Even if you were to place a lion's mane here, you would still score the three points. You just wouldn't make an essence of undo,

which is an extra three points. So it's 2x your points to put a bow on the seven.

Yeah. But technically legal. All right. So then it goes to me. I'm definitely placing this mandre here on space 8.

Thought you'd do that.

And I mean, it's not great because this one will go here. I will need to move things around or maybe I'll make two pairs.

Yeah. So,

that's that.

Perfect. All right. Let's get rid of this. Let's see what I'm working with.

All right. Now, it goes to me. And, you know, I think I'm just going to close out that Mandre.

Making it happen.

So, I'm taking a mandre and a handbane, please. And then you get a vine, an elderberry. There you go.

So, I'm definitely placing my mandre on four. And that would require me to place this on four as well, which does create a scoring pair of handbane flowers. It's just two points versus four because I do have one tile touching the perimeter unfortunately.

That's fair. The good news though is I brewed a potion because I have a set of four mandre tiles adjacent to each other in a straight line. And again, that can be uh horizontal or diagonal. So, because I've done that, I'm going to harvest these flowers. So, I place the harvest token in the center to show that all four of these cells have been harvested. I can no longer move them at all. I cannot discard them, replace them, reorient them, nothing. They're staying like that.

Basically, you can't use potions to manipulate them anymore.

Right. At the end of the game, I will still score four points for them as long as I maintain their set. So,

that is a lot of ground to have to protect.

Yeah, if I add even one additional Mandre to any of these adjacent spaces, then I

Seven spaces that can ruin it.

I forfeit these points. So, I do have to be mindful of that.

Yes,

but at least I get a potion.

Yeah.

So, this is nice. This is a chaos elixir. as a turn. I can plant a tile from the active player side and a tile from the everyone else side of the back board

where it's like one here and then one there instead of just only on your side.

I am required though to choose a tile from my side whether I'm the everyone else or the active player. But there you go. Score me four points at the end of the game regardless of whether or not I've used it.

Pretty good. All right, so I have these two. I'm going to put this on five here.

Mhm.

That means I have to go over here and put this on five. I want to extend this out.

I wanted an elderberry that turn.

You wanted an elderberry? I decided just to go with

Yeah,

with the finishing them.

So, that gives me the ability to spread out the vine even further if need be. I need to get some flowers though to go with that.

You have flowers?

No, more.

Yeah,

like more and more.

All right. Done.

Yep.

Okay. So, then that is the end of my turn. I'm going to draw a card. Discard this one. It's to you.

I've been planning this one since I grabbed it. It's going to go like this.

Sounds epic.

So, a lion's mane for me and then a hen bane.

Hen bane. Oh, I get my first flowers. Oh, and another mandrake.

A mandrake. Yeah. What do you want to do with that?

Oh man, I'm going to use my potion now.

Yeah.

So, instead of taking a Mandre, um I'm going to take a lion's mane. So, basically, I'm taking the flowers from my side, which I'm required to take one of these two. And then I'm taking a lion's mane.

Started on that lion's mane game.

Yeah, I don't have any.

All right. So, these line up perfectly for seven and seven. So, let's just do this. So, I'll put the seven here. So, this is scoring its max.

Four points.

Four points.

None of them are touching the perimeter.

Yeah, there's no potions for that. Lion's mane will go on the seven here. And now this is the potion bonus. So I have a configuration of three in this kind of formation.

The triangle triangle. Yep. I'm going to put this lock it up.

It's been harvested. You're harvesting cards.

Uh so I have an an essence of undo. My favorite one of the three.

Yeah, me too.

I like the name. Uh swap positions of any two unlock tiles. And that could be, you know,

really nice. I want that one.

So I'll be just here. It's going to score me an extra three points. Yeah, whenever you decide to use it. All right, I am gonna place these out. I think I'm going to go 12 because I finally have some flowers to go with these vines.

That's a good one.

So, I'm placing them right there. And I can't I can't make um a Mandre set on that space anyway.

So, I'm going to place this one here on matching space number 12 in the hopes of creating my own lion's mane triangle.

All right. Very good. So, that's you. That's me. Let's see what I got.

Okay. Okay. So, that goes to me. I'm going to play my card like this. So, I get a henbane and a an elderberry, please.

Elderberry.

You get a vine and a Mandre

and vine and mandrake.

Yes.

All right. I know. I'm going to place these. I'm just going to go 21 because I need five of these. You need so many of the elderberries for those to to do you any good.

Pay you off.

And then this has to be here. So, now this is another scoring pair. But these are so both suboptimal. Gosh, you never you don't want to see that.

It is what it is.

So, I think I'm going to go with 16.

Continue my Mandre expedition here.

And then 16 here. I need to find Yeah, vine.

Okay. And they're all connected.

Yeah, this is all connected. And then this I can uh flower into here. Flower or vine out. So, it's good.

Oh, the flower the flower here is unfortunate.

No. Yeah,

because the flower tiles connect on adjacent spaces. You're only going to be able to connect it one way. Just so you I know what to kind of rub it in.

Yeah. Thank you. I appreciate that.

All right, that's it. Right.

Mhm.

I'm going to draw a card. So, now it goes to you.

How would you like to orient your card?

Uh, like exactly this. So, I get a vine and a an elderberry.

And now you get a Mandre.

Mandre.

There you go. Mandre and flower.

Here's your vine.

All right. Vine, elderberry.

All right. What are you going to do with that?

So, I think I'm going to go with the elderberry on one.

Okay.

So, we're working it. Uh, and then now this vine, we just talked about vines. I'm going to find a way to keep sneaking out. This is a lot of vines. I I don't know if you know, this just one point per, so it's really like clamping down on other scoring opportunities, but

Yeah, I know. It's not great. Like, technically, the other uh types of plants are also just one point per tile in their set, but the thing that's nice about the other plants is their ability to score bonuses in general because you can double the henbane flowers as well. And vines are just one point.

One point.

So anywh who for me this is not great because I definitely want to put this here you know.

So what number is that?

This is 19.

Okay.

You did this on purpose.

I mean no. Yes.

So that I would be trapped.

Are you going to do that to your Oh, but you're

because I am going to hopefully gain a potion. Oh, this is going to kick me in the butt if I don't. But if I gain another potion, then

Monique is destroying her four points that she is currently scoring here. in the hopes of brewing one of the other two potions so that I can fix that later. You know what I mean?

Oh, I know. Yeah. No,

that face.

I mean, that means you're you're indebted to it right now.

Yeah, I'm indebted to it. I get it.

But there's still plenty of game. So, anyhoo, that is your card, right?

Yep. So, give me out another draw. Thank you.

Well, I'm going to play my card like this. So, I'm taking a mandrake this time. Okay.

I know I kind of complained about it, but I'm taking one. I have a mandre and a lion's mane, please.

Mandre,

you get a henbane and an elderberry.

Henbane, elderberry it is. All right. Oh, sorry.

That is okay. All right. I'm gonna place my lion's mane here on six and my mandre on six here because there is opportunity there.

Cuz why not, right?

Well, I can still This is the only like configuration of four on this side of the board. And you

Yeah. This this is this is not This is not good. Oh,

no. Cuz this 10 would be ideal here. And this would then slot into this spot.

Well, you can use a potion to

I could. Yeah. And I have exactly that potion. So, I I could technically do that,

but I do have a card here that's telling me I can do something else. Yeah, I have that ability. Let's just go with it. I'll go with it right now. So, 10 here.

Okay.

10 here. That's okay. I will switch this out by using the potion when the time is right.

Such a lone

alone alone. That's literally nothing tile. Yeah,

it's not the ideal spot.

Pimple and

it'll it'll get switched. That's

your beautiful garden.

I know.

All right, back to you.

All right, I think I have to do it this way. I don't like it, but I'm going to do it because that gives you another one of these guys, which I don't want.

Elderberry and vine.

Thank you. Here's your vine. May I have a lion's mane, please?

You getting yourself a lion's mane, which I did not want to give you. Thank you.

All right, so this is a clear as day play. So on two.

Uhhuh.

So now this is one, two, three, four, five. Exactly. Lock it.

Harvest it.

Yeah,

lock it. I get this one. This is a potion. This is the tincture of transmutation. Replace one unlock tile with another tile from the supply. So, that's kind of nice. So, I can just replace that with a flower or something like that. So, I have this uh it's getting a little tight here. So, I'll just keep mine kind of stacked like that.

And now that uh is going to score you four points. This will score me four points because one, two, three, four of the five are on the periphery on the edge.

Yeah,

there you go. So, that's that. Uh, because I played it on two, this is gonna have to play on two as well. Just like that.

That is a really long vine.

That's not what

a weed.

It's just the way like honestly it's the way these cards are coming out. It's like vine just happens to be the thing that is working on this side also.

Right. All right. Well, then it goes to me. And um I definitely want to complete this lion's mane and brew the potion.

Regardless of which which I put it on, it's going to ruin one of my friends. Yeah. So, do I want to go 11 or do I want to go seven? I'm going to go seven just for the mandre protection

of of Yeah. of making a mandrake

or or I do put it on 11 and swap it because I'm about to brew that potion. Swap it with this tile. You know what I mean?

I don't, but let's see.

Let's do it. Let's do it. So, that was this. Okay.

Is that seven? So, I'm going to place it here.

11.

On 11.

Your hand goes require me to put this on 11 as well.

So, now those hen baines aren't scoring.

These ones are not scoring now.

As of now,

but

but I'm brewing an essence of undo. So, may I harvest this, please? And may I have one of the potions? Yes, this one me three points.

Swap skis one.

The end of the game. And it allows me to swap the positions of any two unlocked tiles. I could use it to swap these two.

Yeah.

So, it would give me the mandre that I want and create a uh

a potential handbane flower scoring.

You going to do it now?

Yeah, I think I might as well.

Yeah, you might as well.

So, I'm going to flip this. I'm going to swap the positions of these two because again, when you um when you use that potion, it can be between both of your gardens.

There you go. That was pretty good.

There we go. Very nice. All right,

that worked it pretty well.

That is That's your card, right?

Yeah, that was me. Yeah. All right.

So, you get a new one.

A new one for me.

Then it goes to me.

Okay.

And I'm going to play my card like this. So, I get a Mandre and an elderberry, please.

Mandre, elderberry.

You get a handbane and a lion's mane.

Bane. Lion's mane, you say.

All right. I definitely know where these are going.

Okay.

My elderberry is going here on 16. I'm one away. One away from brewing this potion. So, it goes on 16. And this Mandre goes on 16 as well. So I'm also one away here

from brewing on

um a mandrake the mandrake type

once okay

okay I am going to put this on 14

oh

isolated little one over there

just a low 14 on the inside cuz I want this to be on the inside you know

so then that means that gives me flexibility to basically go eight 13 I don't want to do 19 cuz I want the mandrekes

and worst case scenario if I have to bail to one of these I just won't score the extra two

okay but ideal would be there.

Very nice. So, that is me. I'm going to draw a new card. Discard this one. We are getting down

to it. I don't even know how many cards there are here, but it doesn't look like a lot.

So, back to you.

Well, this kind of stinks, but I'll put it out here.

Got a Mandre Lion's mane.

Oh, I got a vine and an elderberry. Thank you.

Yeah, I know. Well, I set myself up knowing what I was getting. So, 19. Here we go. Let's harvest the Mandre. Now I have a complete set.

Okay,

this goes here.

So, you're going to brew.

I'm brewing a

chaos

chaos elixir as a turn. Plant a tile from, you know, the one on each side. We talked about it, but I have a full set.

Yeah.

And Mon'nique's about to make a full set.

Three points at the end of the game for you,

fortunately. So, that's that one. And then because I played 19, now I'm setting up another lion's main play over here. There we go.

All right. Very nice. I am going to Well, Livian called then I'm going to complete the set.

So, I'm placing this on 23. And now I've created my own tincture of transmutation. I'm going to harvest this.

Um, before I forget though, let me place this vine.

Yeah,

on 23 as well. So, I'm going to do that.

Mhm.

Right.

Yep. That was good.

Okay. So, I get a tinure of transportation. I can replace one unlocked tile with another tile from the supply. I will have to think about that one. But now I have also completed a full set. Yeah.

So, it's going to be three points at the end of the game.

So, we'll see. Right. When I saw like the what you gave me and then what I had the combination I was like ah this makes my hand but it also

gives you I was really hoping that the elderberry that you put on the previous turn. You put it on 23.

Oh.

But when you put it on the other one I was like dang it.

Why?

Because 23 is the one that that makes the vine and the elderberry that I knew I was giving to you. So you put this one here on the previous turn. I was really hoping you were going to put it here.

Fed into my garden. You gave me what I needed. Like I knew I was going to have to give it to you because I wanted to set this thing up right here, but I don't know. There's probably plus and minuses and I'm probably making mistakes, but anyway, that's my turn.

All right. Well, we'll see. There's still plenty of games. So, now it goes back to me. I'm going to place my card like this. So, let's go. Hen, lion's mane. You get a vine and a mandrake.

Hendrick business.

What is going on?

Yeah, good luck with that. So, um I'm going to place I'm going to place my headband here.

Okay. So that at least gets me the four points as long as that stays alive. And then this has to be on 14. So there's possibility there.

All right.

All right.

Well, I got these. I was thinking about doing the potion, but maybe not now. Um the one that where I can take one from each side.

So mandrekes are definitely not hanging out here. We're going to put the mandre nice and far over. Uh let's just put it on 22.

22.

Why not?

It's going to be like the whatever.

It's the whatever.

You can make a

No, I can I can make a four here. it has to show up a bunch. And um worst case scenario, if I don't like if I'm just going to score four points.

Yeah.

Then I can curve it up this way. If maybe a flower or vine it forces me over here. So, right.

I don't know. So, that's that. So, that's 22. Now, we get our very first

vine.

Vine. Is there one away that

I don't I don't have a vine on this board.

Can I get this to Yes. Okay. So, I can spread out this way. Yeah. There we go.

That's something.

That's something.

There you go.

All right. So, now it goes back to you.

Okay. I think I have this prepared properly. I think it's going to go like this.

Lion's mane. What? You know, like that.

An elder berry.

Yeah, elderberry.

What am I going to do with that

for you? You can swap them or use a potion or something.

Am I going to H?

So, I got these. I set this one up. So, this 13 is going to go here, which is exactly what this wants. The hen bane flowers are scoring best case scenario. And then this 13 is here. We're going to get another potion.

What?

Harvester.

That's nice.

There we go. harvester on this uh sunboard over here. So then that gets me one of these tiebreers most potions.

Yes,

tiebreers most potions.

Tiebreers most potions.

You got to use those.

I should probably use

You don't have to, but it's just so it's so beneficial.

I mean like right now it's like I don't quite need it right now technically like the way I'm looking at everything over here.

Yeah. All right, I'm going to go ahead and place my elderberry unn

starting a new

I am.

Oh, those elderberries won't score. Starting a fresh, huh?

They won't score it. They have to be part of five.

Yeah,

I have this.

Okay.

I can always replace this.

Mhm.

So, I don't know. I'm hoping we'll get there. Um I I feel like there's only like six maybe more turns.

I think I've played seven cards and you went first.

So, there's a chance. There's a chance. Slim,

you say.

All right. Here. This

goes away. This is your card. Comes

to me.

I am going to try to give myself that chance, I think.

Okay.

By maybe playing like that. I need a I need a vine here, right, to make that scoring. Yeah, let's do that. So, I got a vine and an elderberry.

What is this? Elderberry for you.

You get flowers and a lion's mane.

Yeah, flowers and lion's mane. Honestly, I'm probably going to use my the one where I can uh get from the other side.

That one.

So, I'm going to flip this over.

Okay, that's your

So, I'm taking I think I will take the flower.

Okay, then. Do you want an elderberry or a vine?

I will. Gosh, look at this. Um, I will take Do I really have to take a vine?

Unbelievable. I'll take

an elderberry.

Elderberry. I know. I know. But I'm looking at it like, where am I going to actually place this?

All right. Um, I'm just Mine is very simple. I'm going 15.

Okay.

And I can now I now have a I guess doesn't matter, huh?

Mhm.

I now have a connected flower right there. All right.

You did that, huh?

Yeah.

All right. Let's just start a new elderberry and four up here.

It's not the most ideal. It's a lot of work. It's a lot of work to get there.

Yeah.

Uh then that means this four has to go here. And gosh, I mean, I have no idea how this is going to shape out. Let's just do that.

Okay,

that looks like something.

So, you want vines?

I want vines over there. So, then I can do like maybe a swap switch.

A swap switch

kind of thing.

Oh, you're you're very blocked. You're very blocky.

Careful now.

All right,

I'm judge.

Back to you.

All right, let's just go like this. Elderberry and flower, please, for me. And then you get lion's mane.

Lion's mane.

What's the other one? Henbane for you.

Lion's Oh, and this

lion's bane. Hen's bane.

No good. All right. I am going to Gosh, I'm going to I'm going to I'm going to create a little gappy

gappy.

I'm going to put this 15 here. Hopefully, I can fill the gap later. And then I made a boo boo. This should have been rotated here on the previous turn, but alas, we will place you

where? Uh, I don't know. It has Wasp 15, so I'll place it here.

Just exposed to Man. Where's this going to go? It doesn't matter. I have no idea where this is going to go.

Okay,

let's just Well, no.

Where is this?

No, no, no, no, no, no. Let's do this.

Our gardens are crumbling.

This is falling apart.

Oh my gosh.

If I can get one vine in here that goes, then I can then, you know, I can score. And then this could be like the not largest vine in this, right? The my largest vine in the the moonlight garden is just one. So, if I can put one here, connect, and then get another one, then it's clearly the largest one. Okay, that's me.

I hate this because it's going to I'm now in a pickle. Do I just finish out the lion's mane

because I can use that to just get me an essence of undo now. Replace this with the lion's mane, create that, and get get that potion. Or I can just go for it and hope to get the tincture of transmutation in the end.

The problem is if I put this here, it's going to require me to put this here. And now that's not scoring.

That's not good.

You know what I mean?

That's not good.

It's not good.

No.

Like I could use

no flower undo to swap this with something else. But

you swap it with a flower. You can swap it with a vine.

No. Swapping swap it with the flower. It's still going to be next to it. I have to swap it away.

Okay. I see.

You know what I mean? Like cannot be top. You're saying swap. I thought you meant the red one. Okay.

So, I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to go for the the red. I think it's worth it.

Wow.

I'm going to place this here on two and place that on two.

Really?

Yeah. That's right, Naveen.

Truly,

I'm doing that.

Okay. Anyway,

what does that mean for me? What are you gonna That means you got

It doesn't mean anything right now. It means I'm taking a risk. It means you might be fine.

That's true. I fine.

Anyh who, I'm going to do that. So, may I have an elder berry, please? And get a vine.

This is not looking good right here.

And you get this. You get to figure out the same problem I had.

This guy

and a lion's mane.

And lion's mane. Lion's mane. No.

Treat yourself. Don't Don't spend it all in one place. I'm going to place my

elderberry there.

And this one here.

It doesn't matter which way. Let's do that. All right. What are you doing?

Where are the mandrekes? This is this was a setup here for for Mandre central. Where where are you Mandre

tough?

They are not coming. Well, as I've declared, they are not coming.

We will put this one here.

Okay,

we'll put this one here.

They've been declared to not be coming. Yeah.

Goodbye.

Goodbye.

All right.

My gosh.

Uh back to you.

All right.

Yeah, there are only there's only one card left.

Card left.

So, it's you.

Me,

me, you. That's it.

Me. So, one, two, three. Three turns.

Good luck.

Thanks. All right. Here you go, Mik.

You'll appreciate this one.

Here's an elderberry for me.

Flowers and Mandre for you since they're not coming.

Oh, it's horrible.

Mandre. And then I think you had a henbane.

Yeah. All right. That was terrible.

So, uh, elderberry if I want to do anything glorious with it. I'm going to I'm going to put this elderberry here on three.

Okay. Okay.

And that forces this flower here. This is terrible flowering right now. Just awful. Look at this. Not good.

Okay.

This is not good.

It's not good.

Yeah. So, yeah. I got to figure out some. So, I don't know. I don't know how I'm going to wind this all up. Even with these potions, I can't figure out what I'm doing.

Oh, yeah. You have a lot. You don't want to use any of them?

I do, but I don't know what I'm doing. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Okay. That's kind of a problem. All right. So, then it goes to me. I am I don't want to place this on this board because anywhere I place it, it will touch a mandrake and that's not good.

You want to touch a mandre here. You get four points for touching it there.

No, I'm going to I'm going to take that out so I can I can make a chaos elixir.

So, this has to go on this board. I guess it doesn't really matter. I'll place it on five

so that I can place this one on five and I'll have options for where to place the other one if I need to. All right. Before uh you end your turn though, I do want to use this. I'm gonna replace one unlock tile with another tile from the supply. I'm gonna replace this lion's mane.

May I replace it with an elderberry, please?

Oh, you're not going to do the elderberry thing.

I'm going to try. I think so.

So, there's that. You can only use one of these per turn. Per

turn. Yeah.

So, I wanted to make sure just in case I needed

more than I need

the turn economy for the potions. You know what I mean?

Yeah.

Okay. All right. It's the swapping that is like I don't think I can swap anything good. This one is probably used that I will use, but the swapping of stuff is is where it's kind of tough.

All right. Well, you're drawing the last card.

I'm going to play my card and it's definitely going to be like this. So, I get an elderberry, please. And flowers.

Elderberry and flowers for you.

Penbane for you.

Thank you. Uh, but he did.

Oh, sorry. I got a mandrake. Oh,

all right. Time to complete this uh set. So, I get a pot a potion. May I have a a harvest token, please?

That's not good for me.

So, I make the tin tincture of trans.

You went for it. You did it. There you go.

I did. I went for it. And I'm going to place So, this has to be on 24, right? That's 24.

So, I'm going to place this like this.

So, I connect the flower.

I really wish I

um And then I'm going to use this. Replace one unlock tile with another tile from the supply. Yeah,

I'm going to replace this with a vantage.

Oh no,

please.

Oh no.

Thank you. All right, I have made another chaos elixir.

Oh no.

So I have one of those.

Oh no.

So this says as a turn plant a tile. Oh yeah. So I can use that on the last turn. I needed that.

That's very good. All right.

I want that one.

Pretty nice.

The mandrekes weren't coming and now I have one. So I'm going to start off by actually using my red potion. Replace one unlock tile with another from the supply. So I am going to get rid of this.

Okay.

See you later. And I'm going to make it into a mandrake.

Nice.

Okay, there we go. That's that. Then now I have these two.

Yeah.

So I am going to put uh well I'm going to put this on 21.

Okay.

On 23.

23.

Let's do on 23.

And then this one will just hang out here uselessly.

Oh,

don't worry. You're not

don't think to see here.

Don't worry about this.

All right. So that's just going to chill there.

Yeah.

All right.

That is going to just chill there. You're correct.

Done. Yeah.

Okay, that is it. That's it. That was my final turn. So, the game is in your hands.

My hands.

You have the last

say

the last card.

Yeah. So, it's going to be this one. You can take a lion's mane and you can have one of those.

Oh, thank you.

And I'll take a man Drake.

Yeah. And a vine.

Vine.

So, I do get I do have this. I have my chaos elixir. So, I can decide if I don't like this combination,

right?

I can decide something else.

So, definitely this Mandre's going here. And by it going there, I lock it up.

And then I get my four potion. There we are. Then that means this has to go here, which is not good for me. So I'm going to spend the swap uh positions of two unlock tiles.

Mhm.

So I'm going to be swapping this one

with

not that one. It's going to be Sorry. This it uh this doesn't really matter. It's going to be this one. It how that oriented. It doesn't matter cuz it's going to be swapped

with this over here. So, we're going to keep that going.

Okay.

And then, so that keeps that going. And then now we have another herring.

Oh, nice.

A little matchy match.

Little matchy matchy.

There we go.

Okay.

These flowers are useless. All these flowers are so useless. Ah.

Oh,

I couldn't get them to

12 points that you left.

No, that left on the floor.

Never 12 points.

All right. Well, as for me, it really doesn't matter where I place these. It also doesn't matter. I there's no point in using that because all of those four different types of tiles.

You've done everything is what you're saying.

They just won't do anything for me because I've closed off my vines,

right?

You know what I mean?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

The m the mandrekes are

That's okay. I had a useless three flowers.

Oh, okay.

So, that makes you feel better.

Yeah.

I'm just going to make sure that they don't uh make me forfeit. Yeah. Any scoring tiles. So, let's do that.

There you go. That works for me.

All right. That's it. And that's it.

That is the end of the game because we have played the final plant card in the deck. So now we're going to go ahead and go into endame scoring. Again, especially in higher player accounts, there is another way in which the game can end, and that is if you deplete any of the plant tiles. That was not going to happen in a two-player game. So we are going to score our points using the handy dandy score sheet.

Yeah, it does.

There you go.

So let's go ahead and start with vines and leave. Should I go first?

Sure.

All right. So again, vines score you one point per tile in the largest connected set of vine tiles in each garden. So I only have one set per garden. It's going to be these four, and they're all connected for four points. And these two for two points, a total of six. As for my leaves, they score two points per leaf that's connected to that connected set of vine tiles.

So it's going to be these two

for a total of two, four, six, eight, right? Because they're all connected. And then these two leaves because the other two leaves are not connected.

Plus 12.

So eight nine 10 11 12. Yeah.

Okay. So for me uh my largest here

you can see is one.

Then we have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. So a total of eight.

7 + 1 is eight.

Uhhuh.

Flowers.

Flowers.

Uh one.

Yeah.

2 3 * 2 makes it six. Yeah.

All right. Very good. So now we're going to move on to the handbane flowers. Again, this is two points per set of exactly two adjacent handbane flower tiles. And it's going to be an additional two points if neither tile touches a perimeter. I did a very bad job with that. So, I have these two uh pairs here.

So, four total.

What? Yeah. They're they're each touching the

You don't get the bonus two points.

Yeah. So, four points total there. But I do have a pair here. Neither of which touches the perimeter. So, that's four points. So, a total of eight.

Eight points. Okay. Uh for me I have uh two no perimeter. Make that four.

5 six perimeter.

7 8 9 10 because of no perimeter.

Nice. You're destroying your garden.

Yes. The cracks are showing in my score.

All right. So next we have the lion's main tiles. Again, this is three points per set of exactly three. And within these next three, we're also going to be including our potions. So I have one set. So this is three points for this set of three. But I also have one potion. So that's a total of six points.

Okay, very good. Uh for me, I have two sets. So that's six plus I should have two potions otherwise something went really wrong. So that's going to be 12 points to me.

Yes. And during this endame scoring, it is important that these sets remain in their proper configurations or else you forfeate their points.

Yep. So I got 12 points on that.

Nice. All right. Mandrekes on the other hand are four points per set of exactly four. And then the chaos elixir are also an additional four points. So I have one, two, and then two potions.

Two potions. Yep. So that's 16 points.

I have the exact same thing. Uh here, here, and then two potions for 16.

All right. Elderberries are different

because they need to be in a set of five, but you only score one point for the tiles that are touching the perimeter. So I have two sets of elderberries, um, but only four tiles, I think, in each set are touching the perimeter. So 4 + 4 is eight. I do have two potions made by them though and they are five points each.

So that's 10 plus

eight. So 18.

Okay. So I was trying to work on that over here but you got them at the end fragmented just thing. So uh basically I have 1 2 3 four plus an extra five to make it nine. That is not a good

not good.

Finally we do have our sets of potions. That is a set of one of each type. It's three points per set. I've only made one set. I was missing one more. Same of the

We're both very very close.

So, three points each.

Yeah, three points each.

All right. And that is everything. So, I'm going to go ahead and do some math and I'll get back to you with our final scores. All right. The final scores are in and they are me with 69 to Naveen with 64.

Oh,

very close.

That was close. That was close. Five points. Yeah.

What were you thinking?

I thought I was going to lose by 10 or 11.

Whoa, that's a lot. That was

Well, you scored 18 to my nine on that one.

That's true. But

yeah, there was some balance there. Some balance there.

Yeah, you scored more in some categories.

That's true.

Yeah, with the henbanees I scored more, I guess. Yeah,

it's a shame because I think that um you had some opportunity there.

I did. But you know what? Like I had the the potion that says swap,

but when they're blank, you can't swap. Like you need something there just to fill the space to then swap in the vine.

Then you fill it in the next turn.

I know, but like

and then swap it.

Fill it in the next turn would have been nice. Elderberry blah blah blah bl blue whatever you know nothingness and then you do the swap but the elderberries weren't coming because you ended up making a push for the elderberries.

I which potions did you have left? You could have done this.

No, I got this at the very end.

Oh,

I literally got this.

Did you use what which ones did you not use?

Uh just one swap.

Oh, so you used most of them.

Yeah. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. So So I would have wanted to swap like you know this would have been like ideal something like this that

then that would have been

it was legal. You know what I Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. That would have been an extra 1, two, three, four points and I would still lost by one.

So, there you go.

It's tough. It's tough because you always have to consider

what you're trying to create on both sides. So, picking one number is going to force you to sacrifice or hopefully feed into the other side. It's not it's not the simplest decision space, right?

Yeah.

But there you go. That is Even Glow at two players. Now, again, this game plays up to four players. There's also a solo variant for solo gamers and there's also a family variant if you would prefer to play a simpler game. You can choose to play the family variant which does not include the potions at all. So, it just includes the plant tiles. You just sort of focus on their scoring criteria.

Well, there you have it. That is Even Glow. Now, if you have any questions about the gameplay, feel free to leave them in the comments down below. We'll try to get back to you as soon as we can.
