Surplus of Sloths

Hello. So, today I want to tell you about the cute little card game Surplus of Sloths from Weird Giraffe Games. And this is one you may remember I covered in prototype form, and it is now available in retail. You can get it from potentially your friendly local game store or from All Play's web store for dollar shipping, which I always appreciate. So, I love that it is instead of a tuck box, it is one that slides out. So, this game plays two to four players, and you are collecting runs of numbers in the same suit, which sounds really, really easy. That part's not tricky. The tricky part is how the scoring works because the cards in your hand are going to allow you to take the scoring cards at the end of the game. They won't actually be the cards that score. So, to start out, you are going to get three cards, and you are going to look at them. And again, you're trying to make runs because whoever has in a This was a three-player game, we're going to have four suits. Whoever has the most or the longest run in each colored suit is going to get to take the surplus cards of that color, and the surplus cards are what get you points. So, and then there's numbers range from one to seven in each run in each color, and there's also three X's which count basically as a wild. So, everybody's going to pick one card from their three, and they're going to put it face down, and this is now our surplus. So, we are starting with these

will be the scoring cards. So, we then have two rivers, and these stinking sloths, the ones that don't get drafted, fall into the river into that net and go into our surplus. So, we have our two rows out here that each have four cards, and we have our adorable starting player marker. So, if I am the starting player, I get to decide which row of the river we are drafting from this round. Whichever row the first player takes from, every player is taking from that round. I think I'm going to take this four Nope, I'm going to take this X. So, then the next player would take a card, and the third player would take a card, and the card that doesn't get picked goes over into our surplus, which is actually our scoring pile.

So, we refill that. Play passes to the next player. They choose which row they want to take from, and maybe they decide to take from here as well. They take that. They take that. I'm going to take this, and then that goes to the surplus. And we keep doing this until we can no longer fill the cards. So, if at any point we can only partially fill a row, those cards will immediately go to the surplus, and we will draft from the final row, and then the game will be over. So, then how do we score this up? So, you're going to have a hand of cards at that point of all different numbers, and there's going to be this big surplus. So, we are going to say who has the most We'll start with purple. Who has the most or the biggest run of purple? So, for me, I have a run of two. If that's the most, great. I get that card, and I will score four points because that is a four on there. If somebody else had a run that is larger than three consecutive numbers, they would take it. And on and on. So, that's how your end There will be a lot more cards here, obviously, cuz you'll play more rounds than I just showed you. So, you get to take the cards, and I discard then my purple cards cuz those don't help me. It's only the surplus ones that help me. But, the The interesting thing is, let's say this was all a surplus right here, and I had the most of this yellowy orange color. So, the way that it works

is the five is five points, and then the X's are the value of whatever is there. So, these would all be five. So, I would get 15 points for that. Now, let's say the surplus looked like this, which was a nine. So, I would get nine points there, another nine points here for 18, and then a third set of nine for 27. So, getting those X's into the surplus can really up the score, but because they're wilds, they can also really increase the size of the run in your hand. So, you have to make that decision of do I want it to go to the surplus, or do I want it to stay in my hand for that potential run? You can also add in these adorable baby sloths. And when you draft one of these, you get to take a card if you want from your hand and put it immediately into the surplus. So, you could potentially be setting yourself up for a lot of points.

Also, these count as every color. So, you get to count them in a color for every run in your hand. So, they add a little bit of complexity if you want that. So, like I said, this plays two to four players, and you're just drafting to create runs in your hand, but you're trying to pay really close attention to what's in the surplus so that you can get the cards that have the most points in the surplus because your hand is not what's going to score it for you, it is the surplus. So, that is Surplus of Sloths from Weird Giraffe Games, and it is available now. Let me know were you one of the Kickstarter backers? Did you get this? Do you enjoy it? Have you played it yet? Give me a like and a follow, and I'll keep bringing you more board game content. Thanks. Bye.
