hello everybody my name is Elia and my name is Tyler together we make up c a couple that loves to play board games and I'm wearing a mountain shirt and I am not and I'm wearing a mountain shirt because today we're going to be doing a preview of snow Crest snow Crest snow Crest is designed by Philip duberry and the art is done by Carrie Atkin it's published by Grail games who helped sponsor this video in snow Cris you'll be living in a remote Village up in the mountains and you'll be seeking knowledge by send building a little Village of a bunch of animal people animorph people that will do various things to help you acquire that knowledge now as a note what you see here today is a prototype of this game and the final version may be subject to change but with all that said let's give you an overview of how the game plays as always you'll begin by setting up each player will receive their own player board which will comprise the village they're trying to build the Central Area will house resources buildings cards and Scrolls based on your player counts which will drive the game in condition as when the last scroll is collected the round will finish and final scoring will begin snow crust displayed in turns on your turn you'll take one of the three actions activate a villager add a new villager to your village and activate them or rest let's go over each of these actions activating a villager you'll choose a villager from your grid and activate their ability often this will be gaining resources Scrolls Omens drawing cards and building and
refreshing buildings resources and villagers are the primary way you'll obtain Scrolls you'll gain resources from villager actions by using buildings and by playing cards from your hand or grid when paying certain costs there's a few special actions that'll gain you Scrolls veneration gives you the opportunity to learn from the Guardians you'll pay offering bows and any costs on the card drawn your opponents will as well now for any of the cost in the card you may always move on the track instead although this will likely lose you points at the end of the game meditation is an action you can take where you'll start one round of bids starting with the active player each player will bid prayer bells and the player with the most by the end of one round of bidding will pay them to the supply and gain a scroll lastly if the Juniper resource tokens ever run out a forest card will be flipped here players will pay the cost and the current player will also obtain a knowledge that's the brief villager action description once taking a villager action you'll flip the card face down the next action you can take is adding a villager to your village and activating them you can add a villager from your hand or from the common villager Supply by paying their cost in food you'll then activate the ability and flip the card face down now in terms of placement you can add a villager to an empty space or a space with a face up villager card replacing that card now the next action is rest if and only if you have three cards face down in AOW row horizontally vertically
or diagonally you have to take the rest action you'll collect any resources on the top right of any face up cards and food from the back of the starter villager cards you've placed in the corners if they're face down you'll flip all the cards face up and that's the action now you'll keep playing until the last scroll token is taken from the supply at which point you'll finish the round ensuring everyone has equal turns and proceed to final scoring you'll first flip any cards in your village face down and collect the resources depicted on the cards as if you use them as resources and you'll do the same for the cards in your hand you'll now compare each resource stack the player with the most resources of each type will score an additional scroll finally you'll gain or lose Scrolls based on your position in the omen track and from any buildings you've built you'll tally the points and the player with the most wins and that's snow Crest will you acquire the most knowledge I want all the knowledge I do but there's a limited amount of knowledge that my brain can hold it does make sense that the knowledge is at the top of the mountain I feel like that's where the knowledge should be that you've got to work for it basically you got to get up there and get that knowledge the physical determination will also get you more knowledge endurance yeahh well what do we think about snow Crest what are some of the factors that might cons consider you considering this game out yes reasons you might want to check this one out let's start with the fact that it's a simple light engine buildy feel game
you're going to be like building out your tab below and you'll be able to activate a single card on your turn or rest I suppose and it feels nice when you've got the right cards face up the right cards face down when you're able to activate and do something that offers like a chain combo feels very good and if you're that type of person that enjoys that kind of stuff this game is definitely worth checking out well even acquiring buildings throughout the game get and using those buildings for those resources it's it's a really clever way of slowly ramping up but it doesn't feel overwhelming which I really like no it doesn't and that's why with an engine builder usually you get to this point where it's like it is overwhelming and this is a nice little intro but also still has its complexities that it offers the decision- making space in action I think is another reason to take a look at this uh primarily because of the rest action if you ever have three in a row you have to rest and resting although benefits cuz you do get some resources uh interrupts the game Flow a little bit because you're trying to do all these things that you don't necessarily want to rest every single time so deciding where you place your cards and activate and which ones you activate is really interesting and I felt like it felt like a really unique decision space in my opinion yeah I found that that that decision to make when you were figuring out which card to place where was very interesting cuz you Veer away from placing it in spaces where you might be using like the top two uh uh like starter cards then you don't want to necessarily put it in line
with that so I found it very interesting and the simple fact that you only have three actions that you're able to take makes the game feel a lot less stressful and you can kind of flow into the game and of course like the rest is something you have to do uh and that makes it even more easier to decide what kind of well what kind of actions you're going to be taking exactly another reason to check this game out is the varying ways to get the ancient knowledge yes cuz you can do the veneration action the meditation you can collect the Juniper get the force cards to activate there's a lot of ways to get scrolls yes and I think finding and modifying your grid to find the best way to do that has always been really interesting mhm yeah and you have to remember that like even if you have a full grid you can replace cards so that's an interesting way to be able to change things up if your strategy maybe isn't going the way you want it also means you don't have to put everything in like your eggs in one basket kind of thing there's a lot of varying strategy and there are a lot of ways to get scrolls so you can kind of like dip your toes into each and every one of them to explore and you almost kind of have to because I think that's where the player interaction piece of it comes into cuz if all of a sudden Tyler is meditating I can't let him just get scrolls freely I have to be able to compete for those and it's nice that I can compete with those with cards in my hand or cards on the board so there's a lot of ways to actually get resources and you can the multi-use of the the multi-use function of the cards actually makes it a really clever way to play the game yeah of
course well and then it comes back to even like the having to rest so you have to make those decisions it's this like give and take that the game offers and uh I would beg to differ that like at a higher player count that that would be even more apparent uh we've only been able to play it at two but it's there and when something like that in a player interaction card happens where I'm not necessarily attempting to run a strategy but I am trying to reward myself for doing some doing one of those actions that gives me a card I flip it over and now Ilia has to also pay something because he wasn't maybe paying enough attention to certain things well it's nice to hold on to stuff because if you can't pay that stuff you have to go move negatively in The Omen track and that's negative points at the end of the game unless you get your way back so that's something to consider as you play uh but because it's so Dynamic turn to turn and the Simplicity of actions it creates a really smooth experience overall yeah so if anything any of that Echoes with you I think that this is definitely a game worth checking out like the varying scoring the player interaction that isn't forced player interaction and then the last thing that I would say that we haven't really touched on is that from our experience we've had really close games The Limited nail yeah and because they have got like a limited pool of Scrolls that triggers game end of course you can get more if if you need them later on but even then throughout those I guess we'll call them endgame goals
the the battle for those points is actually very very close so if you want a nailbiter of a game then snow crust is definitely worth checking out yeah it's a really interesting Dam because you are able to see players collect the Scrolls from time and time so you kind of have an idea like oo that's how everybody's doing but there's also of course the way that you play all the cards at the end on your board and in your hand and calculate the resources for them and compare resource totals and for each resource you score a scroll yeah majority yep and you have the omen track as well so there's a couple of factors that are a little bit unknown that keep you at the edge of your seat and we've had like we we only play this at two but each of our games have been a onepoint difference which has felt really exciting yeah it was been it's been very close so it's interesting to see and both of us were doing different strategies so that just speaks to what you're able to do in this game well if any of that captured your interest then you should check out snow crust in the crowdfunding link down below hit that link read a little bit more about it see what other people are saying about it make up your mind about it to see if it's a game that'ss for you exactly and for our question of the day have you ever gone on a mountain hike what was it where was it once I took Tyler on a mountain hike in the middle of the night to see the sunrise and contrary to popular belief I did not get lost we made it to the top we saw the sunrise and it was very pleasant just because we made it there in time does not mean we didn't get lost when I have to step in front and lead the way I
think that means we're lost in the middle of the night the path is sometimes hard to see and sometimes you just go through the path it was very worth it though and I'll definitely cherish that moment for a while yeah cherish me being lost no CU you like to tell everybody I get lost no I just like the the sunset at like 4:00 a.m. was absolutely amazing it was very pretty but if you have a story like that let us know down in the comments below maybe you got lost maybe you didn't or which mountain do you want to go hike is there a mountain on your bucket list so you're like I must hike this mountain yes if you're an narac of the woods you'll have to let us know mhm exactly well until next time though if you liked this video give us a thumbs up hit that subscribe button cuz we make weekly board game content like this and we're happy to have you here but until next time we will see you later see you on the mountain trail bye
