Dungeons of Infinity: Campaign - Discussion
Transcript
some viewers may find the following video disturbing viewer discretion is advised hey everyone welcome back to board games unlocked and today I'm doing a discussion over dungeons of infinity specifically the campaign now quick caveat one I have already done a discussion with my friend Brad over the onot stuff and in in that discussion we basically had talked about how we felt that this game was probably designed around its campaign mode so uh I wanted to do a separate review over the actual campaign um and the caveat to that is I have not finished the entire campaign because I just don't like this game it it doesn't really do anything well for me um and I want to say for me cuz I'm I'm sure there are people out there who would like this game it it's relatively straightforward it might be that simplistic uh element of a Dungeon Crawl that people are looking for but everything just about this just isn't exciting to me it almost feels like it's I don't know like scripted in some way or repetitive in what you do and with that being said I mean the campaign mode is better than the one shots cuz the one shots are just so whatever of an experience because you are trying to gain experience to level up and the level up gets you more abilities and
your abilities do more uh based off your level and therefore you can have better items but the problem I think is all of that just feels so mundane about like your your items are still lame your abilities are cool when you're first using them but then they just become so bog standard of oh I'm playing this character and he could do an attack that does poison damage or he does an attack that does fire damage or he does an attack that does ice damage and we fight the same minions over and over and it's always just swarms of Minions that requires you to just stand on a tile and look at a row of you know grid of 3x3 uh and just roll a D20 and see if they hit and that's that's it and I and I don't like being like simplistic or reductive about stuff like that I I I hate when people are like oh all that game is is playing a card you know stupid like that but with this it really just doesn't feel elaborate or epic in any way now the campaign comes with a a narrative which is fine I didn't find any of the characters compelling it's an interesting idea that there are 10 chapters each with three dungeons in them and the better thing about the campaign is you actually get to keep your experience from dungeon to dungeon so like I said there's three dungeons within a chapter but at the end of that
you like at the end of the third chapter you reset and you pick it you start with a new character each chapter focuses on one of the main 10 characters which again to some people they might like they might like the the bite-sized chunks that you get to focus on one character and that's the main character and everyone else is just around and you can play with different stuff but even then it's like okay we're playing with this new character and he's the main character only for narrative purposes but then everyone else that's playing they're going to be sticking with the same characters they're going to pick different ones but there's only so many characters so you're going to see the same stuff and yeah the different dungeons have different rules but the overall flow of the game is still dungeons of infinity everything about the game that Brad n had talked about is still here except for the threat track which is significantly better like that's what makes the campaign game or the campaign mode probably worth trying at least because that threat meter is the worst it kills anything about this game because every time you're trying to explore or move it just ramps up and by the turn five it's already it's already at at the top in the in the dungeon Lords here so at least with some narrative events that are happening you new rules get kind of thrown in the dungeon and it kind of keeps it fresh but my overall
issue with stuff like that is there's not many rules set around certain dungeons it's still explore and oh you found tile 16 that's debris this time time okay let's draw the top card of debris and these decks of mist and debris and chest and body is they're so lame like I really don't find any of that stuff exciting and the chests you know are by far the worst because it's just gold and your gold feels useless almost I don't know I I just really think that the core element of of this game is not enhanced by a campaign mode like I was hoping it would be again you do get to level up and if you carry over enough XP and you keep fighting which you're going to be fighting a lot because every missed card is basically fight 40 enemies and each time you hit you gain an XP so you'll be level five eventually but then you have to you'll kill them and then you'll equip a level five item that gives you plus five power and whoopy so and you'll have your plethora of abilities but your action points are still there and you're not you never feel cool none of the items you ever get
feel awesome cuz I'm attributing this not necessarily I'm not comparing it to other Campaign games cuz it doesn't feel like it is a campaign it almost feels like it's just tacked together it feels like if you ever played Madara the crawl or the side quest where almost or even the main story a little bit where it felt like every time you went into a dungeon it felt like it was three beats of that dungeon and then like a rest scene that's kind of what this feels like it's three Dungeon Crawl episodes tied together with a loose narrative that's focused around one of the 10 main characters and so the problem that I have with that is you never feel like you're getting cool loot or ramping up and feeling epic by the end of it and the that's is kind of where I'm at like whenever I'm comparing it to other dungeon crawls when you level up it's like a big deal there's there's two ways that I feel like these types of games should go either when you level up it it should feel like a big deal or every time loot is getting dropped it feels fun to try a different item and both of these games um or two games that are dungeon crawls that I think are just Superior is Gloom Haven Frost Haven and massive Darkness 2 and both of those kind of give the the two dungeon craw experiences glue Haven Frost Haven gives level up feels like a you know it's
awesome when you level up because you get to pick a new card and a new build and then uh I mean gold and you just have a kit that you can go out with and your characters play different in Mass Darkness 2 loot that is getting dropped all the time feels awesome and you can equip it to your character that gives you a wacky new set of skills and stuff like that depending on the the the class that you chose here like in this game that we just played um it felt so trivial because like Sasha is a bomb maker and initially that sounds cool oh hey you're you can throw bombs into rooms you can throw bombs and you roll to see if you hit it's but every your window of getting a bullseye which is exactly where you throw it is so large and the bomb can just stun lock any enemy or it can just do a big AOE blast which she's great for mobs so she's going to be leveling up like insanely uh insanely quickly cuz oh I have nine enemies in front of me okay well I'll roll that and look at that it's a bullseye so I'm going to kill that and do a bunch of damage and they're all low level so they all get wiped you just see the same enemies over and over I don't find the Lord the dungeon Lords exciting or like a big bad they're just another larger enemy that hits hard and you're just okay so unfortunately I think the campaign mode
doesn't enhance this from where I would ever want to try this again and and it is unfortunate because I mean maybe it's not honestly maybe it's not unfortunate I did a list I did a running tally of campaign games that I have and I it was 20 and I thought I and that's just what I currently have at my house um not even the ones that are on the way which are probably 20 more so maybe it's maybe it's okay that this one just doesn't work because then I it's one less campaign game I have to have to play but yeah I'm I'm I'm having a hard time finding anything about this that I actually enjoy and the thing is it's not even a grind it's just tedious to play the story is not great the minions are syy the items I mean you just and the reason why they flood you with minions is so you can just get through this massive deck of of loot because half the time you won't even be a good enough level to to get it by the time you're level five you might draw you might kill some minions and get a level one item there's no tier there's no structure of leveling it's designed I guess to almost be like a Rog light where you play and oh hey this time we
killed a bunch of minions and we finally got level appropriate equipment all right but you play again and you don't get that so you just kind of hold on to it in the hopes that later later on you'll be high enough level to equip it and it just gives you a few P more power okay like that's not exciting so there's just I mean if you're wanting character build like an actual kit of characters to build out Madara is your best bet if you're looking for I mean it's not the easiest game to get into because there are a lot of rules but if you are looking for a highly narrative driven dungeon crawl campaign epic campaign Madara is a million per it so that's just kind of where this Stacks this feels like this would have been awesome 15 years ago in like 2009 2010 this feels like it would have been awesome but now there it just doesn't stack up to almost any campaign that's like this hell even if it's not a campaign game it doesn't feel like it Stacks up to any other Dungeon Crawl so yeah that's that's the the unfortunate reality of the dungeons of infinity campaign for me I have no intention of actually doing any more chapters because I just don't like the core system and even if they were trying to get a little bit more
creative with the way that the the dungeon system work and adding a few more rules what you actually are getting because it's not like oh you're doing this dungeon here's a box of of unique stuff for that chapter it's still all the same stuff everything that's here on the table is what's going to be there and you can't really modify that in any interesting way because you've seen it there's no unique Minions that come in there's no unique myth debris body or chest cards there's no unique loot deck it's all flat as what you get is in the box and and it's going to get repetitive sprinkle in a little bit of story and there you go so on a scale of 1 to 10 God I don't know I don't like five it's average I guess it works I mean I hate the rule book I hate the rule book the player r is ass and the play rate is a glorified index um yeah I'm like between a four and a five slightly below average to average at best I don't want to play this again if someone asked me I i' be it'd be a hard pass because I don't really have many redeeming qualities so it's kind of that
argument of what's what's worse a inherently bad game or a terribly boring one and it's not that this game is designed badly it's just that I find it completely boring every step of the way so I don't know that's that's up to for you to decide I'm curious to know your thoughts in the comments below but um other than that like com share and subscribe and have a wonderful whatever time of day is for you hey everyone thank you for watching and I really hope that you enjoyed the video if you would like to see more of my content go ahead and click that subscribe button and the bell to be notified whenever I upload any new content if you feel like supporting the channel you can go ahead and click that patreon link to be taken to my patreon and any help is truly appreciated other than that stick around for any any other run throughs or reviews or cool top 10 or whatever I feel like putting on other than that like comment share and subscribe and have a wonderful whatever time of day it is for you
