We are the brothers Murf. Today at the game house we are playing the Royal Society of Archaeology which is uh brought here by my gosh by Capstone Games who are sponsored this place. Absolutely. This is the one of the latest ones being brought over by Capstone. In this game, we are kind of rival archaeology teams uh you know traveling to the four corners of the earth in search of doing expeditions, search of relics and things like that
uh and going all around London to talk about our findings and so we're going to do is we're going to show you an overview of how this game is uh going to work. Then we're going to hop right into our two-player play. In the Royal Society of Archaeology, players take on the role of explorers at the dawn of the 20th century, whose goal it is to explore the oceans and continents and go on expeditions, finding relics along the way. The game will be played over five rounds. Players will first choose a bonus space, which will decide the turn order. Now, it's time for actions. On a turn, you can choose one of your three explorers to send out to a location and take an action. Each worker has an expertise level as well as a bonus action or benefit they provide. Their expertise level will be important for determining the strength of the action they take. There are four main action areas on the board. The University of London allows you to gain knowledge in the four regions of the world where you can go on expeditions. Expeditions will have requirements for the amount of knowledge you have in the area to be successful. The city allows you to gain a patron for some money or to sell off a relic for 15, but this does hurt your reputation. The Port of London allows you to go on an expedition. When doing so, you will play a card from hand or choose a card from the market, and this will be the location you are exploring.
Each expedition requires an expertise level from your explorer, as well as a minimum amount of knowledge, and at times there are other prerequisites. Each expedition also costs money. When you play an expedition, you will gain all bonuses listed at the bottom. You have two score tracks, prestige and knowledge. At the end of the game, the lower of the two will be your score. Completing an expedition always awards that explorer a bump in expertise, and expeditions often awards large sums of prestige as well as knowledge and relics. Relics will allow you to pull or grab randomly from the bag associated with the expedition area. And these can be used to satisfy patrons, go into the royal museum, or be sold. When going to the Royal Museum, you can spend relics to claim the matching spaces on display. There is pottery, jewelry, instruments, and scrolls. And some spaces need relics of a specific type and color, while other spaces may want a specific type of any color, or vice versa. Each time you place a relic, you'll gain an instant bonus. And at the end of the game, having the majority of markers in each area will grant bonus prestige. At the end of the round, players will gather their workers and refresh the market of cards and play again. At the end of the third and fifth rounds, players check to see if they've met the royal requirements. If they haven't, they are penalized, and this can cause them to lose points, abilities, and more. After five rounds, the game comes to an end.
Here you score the grand gallery with complete collections awarding 12 prestige to the player with the most markers present and six if the collection is incomplete. Each player will secretly work on two study cards which will award knowledge based on the expeditions they underwent. Bloomsbury tiles are awarded in-game and earn you prestige and may grant endgame points as well. And for each unfulfilled patron, you lose prestige. And finally, you will compare the two score tracks and the player with the highest score from their lower track is the winner.

You know, that's like a Kleenex. Yeah. It's like that's the that's the absolute pinnacle of marketing. If you can get your brand so good, it just becomes the the word for that thing.

Um, so we're going to find some relics, man.
Shall we archaeology a little? we should archaeology, I think. I think that's the term. Let's see.
Archaeology. So, I will say um is there are a couple different like thematic notes in the rule book about the theme. Um because the theme is kind of a murky theme in terms of like archaeology back in this day was consisted of a lot of just stealing cultures stuff and
go find a thing and take it back to your to your part of the world and without necessarily consideration of the people who that stuff belongs to.
Yeah, it's tough like archaeology. We learned a lot from archaeologists and stuff, but there was a lot of shady stuff about just like stealing relics and then selling them to private people or giving them to a museum. And there's been a lot of efforts to return a lot of those things back there. So, they do have thematic notes in the rule book, which I appreciate. A couple different spaces in the rule book. And the uh designer actually made, you can scan this QR code, um, made a whole kind of directory of all the different spots in the rule book and like their history and some of the archaeology history, which is really, really cool. I always enjoy historic kind of addendums to rule uh to rule books when the game is based in history. But yeah, I just want to let you know that like yeah, we'll be gaining relics. Sometimes selling those relics are given away and that was a a not so great part of history.
Nope.
But luckily archaeology doesn't really do that much anymore. So
hopefully hopefully getting better by now.

Um
so um we're going to uh go ahead and choose our turn order. So, based off of our reputation track, I was able to get a reputation bump based off of my um Royal Society card here. So, I'll get to choose first. So, again, the turn order, who gets to choose turn order is based off of your reputation track, but that's not actually your turn order,
right?
So, my question is is you know what? Let's go ahead and just get some extra money because going on expeditions, they're far away. Going to get special money. Someone's going to give me five bucks.
All right. I am I'm going to jump over to here and I'm going to get two reputation because I started the game with my uh little player power here with some relics and stuff. So I'm like well let me get my reputation up so I can go to that royal museum
cuz the museum you required to have six reputations
very rad reputation like you've just been stealing relics and selling them some of that. They're like no you need to have a high reputation as you go here
better come correct it's kind of represented by this spots here. Okay, Mikey. So, we've done that. We then you would gather explorers at the beginning of the upkeep phase here, but um we don't have it. Also, we'll say that in a two-player game, uh not only are you playing on the two and three player side of the board, um you can choose to either play against like an Ottoa, which is how you play the solo game, so you actually have a third player in the game, or you can choose to just block. So, what's called like the competitive game or or something like that. Um, yeah.
And so we're choosing just to block it, just to make it for simplicity sake, but this is kind of a neutral bing bong player here who's just kind of, uh, getting in the way.

At least here in the museum. All right, Mikey. So, um, we have the opposition we have. So, it's going to be me first because again, now we're going off of this turn order here. We got five rounds. And so, we do need to get three things into the museum or else I will get punished severely. And so, um,
flogged. Absolutely flogged man. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and send my person here. So they have three expertise. So they will go to the three spot. Also one thing here is whenever you go here there's someone higher than you. You will get this lower bonus. I will get a bump on um on a knowledge track here in of my choosing. I'm choosing red um which is pretty cool. So, this is considered to be one of their like explorers here. Okay. And then because I have a level three expedition, I can do either this one or this one. I'm going to go and do this one here, which allows me to bump up two knowledge tracks. I'm going to bump up yellow and what else is out here? I'll go and bump up green. Boom.
Get some knowledge cuz I got to have some knowledge to go on these expeditions. All right, that's me.

Um, and I'm going to deliver a relic.
Yep, you can deliver one because you have an expertise of two or you could just get science if you wanted to.

So, I'm going go here, which means I'll take a disc and I'll plop that there, which gets me an immediate bonus of $5, which good cuz I started with no money.

So, the port of London is actually going to go to somewhere. Um, and I This is a level two. So, I'm just going to go here and I am going to go here to Alpus Magna, which is a yellow one. And so, I need to have two um prestige. I do have not prestige, uh, expertise, expertise, prestige, reputation, knowledge. There's a lot of similar sounding words in this. Sorry.

This is knowledge. That's reputation. And this is expertise. I got it.
I was reading a review about this and they were like, "Oh man, I keep messing up the words." So, you have two expertise, which I do have with this person right here. And again, I could always spend a reputation to get a virtual one if I needed it. I need to have three knowledge in yellow. I do have three knowledge here in yellow. I need to spend five sorry not five nine pounds to go here because it's it's kind of far but it's not like the farthest place on the planet.

Okay. So, first thing that's going to happen is my um middle person here is going to bump up their expertise and then I'm going to get four prestige. Boom.
I'm going to get one science shaflap, which is the sound of science in this land.
And then I will gain one knowledge in yellow. So, I don't have get any relics for this one, but I will go ahead and gain that. And I was kind of keeping this aside because there are certain things that require you to have different ones. And this is specifically a archaeology. No, archaeology. Um, exploration. Um, excavation. Exploration expedition. So many words. So yeah, very nice. Um, I am going to take Oh, sorry. Real quick, because I'm a lower person here than them, I could have reserved a card.

And so I'll get this pat. So basically whatever their expertise level is uh it's going to be times five. So I'm basically going to get 10 bucks from this patron like go get me stuff. I'll put this friend over here. Sure. Sweet. Okay. And that's me.
All right. For my last action, I'm going to go to the port of London Expedition. They are an expertise of three. Uh so here I'm not the lowest or the highest. So I guess I get nope. But I get to go to Teot Wakon, one of my favorite games. Check it out. Um so they uh this requires expertise of three. I have that. The knowledge has to be two in green. And they have a virtual plus two. So even though I'm only on one on the track here, I do qualify uh for this because of their particular area of study. This will cost £11. Uh, and there are no other prerequisites. So, first they're going to get a bump up their expertise. I will get four prestige. I'll get a bump up in
knowledge,
South American knowledge. I'll gain a reputation. And then I'm going to get to uh gain a a blind relic from the bag and then two of my choice. So, I'll go the blind one first. We'll see what the bag is. It is pottery. And then let me take a look out here. Uh I think by the way, you will get this because you just have to have someone.
One of them has to be hired.
Perfect. I'm going to fetch a jewelry out.

from this. And then I get to choose another one of my choice. Uh let's get some pottery. I already have Now, let's get an instrument because that's something I don't have. So, this way I just kind of diversify my my uh relics here. Okay. Yep. And I believe that is all of my goodies. Okay. So, that is going to be the end of the round cuz we're out of explorers. Um
and so, yeah. So, we'll go to the end of the year. So, that's mostly means we're going to move this up. Um and basically at the end of the round of round three and then round five, we have these royal requirements. So again, the first one is to have three things in here. The last one is to be at 45 prestige, which is quite high. Um, and if you don't, you'll get punished um by the king personally. Okay, so now we'll go back to the upkeep phase. So we're going to define who's first player. So Mikey, you will get to choose first player first or you have to choose your spot on the player order track first because you have a higher reputation, right? So I guess we'll move these off just so you because you can choose the spot that I was at or something like that.
Sure. Um, I'm going to go here and get a knowledge bump and I'm going to bump up in my knowledge of age. Hey.

Um, what am I going to think? You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to get reputation because I'm thinking that I need to go to Ah, this is interesting. A lot of my cards have not been great for getting me um relics and stuff.

You'll get to see these. So it's like four reputation. This is an ongoing theme where basically anytime I do the Royal Museum, I'll gain two reputation or just 20 bucks.

I only have three, but I get a plus two in red from this gentleman here. And then, oh, it cost me $17. I can't do that. What am I doing? Just Oh, Dang, I totally wasn't even looking at the money. I keep about when you reach these points, remember you get a science, a science or prestige, two science, and if you bump, you get more and more prestige because you just have a little knowledgeable. So, I was just like, "Okay, never mind. That's a foregone conclusion." But I could do something in my hand if I made those changes. So, I'm not changing.
You could use multiple reputation to bump yourself up. That's true. Many times above max is six though. You can't especially for things like this. You can't go above six.
Since I did get here, as you just mentioned, I do gain a basic.

And I will do this one now. So, I have four expertise. We're good. I do have for knowledge like I said because of their little boost and now I do have 17 17 bucks. Um yeah I totally forgot the money part. Um it's like you know painters you know no one wants to do commission work but that's how you make money right?

And then for h I need to try and turn in three of these next round to be able to do uh not get punished, which I really don't want to. Basically, the punishment for this one means you never get these bonuses.

Um and because I think it's going to be harder, I'm going to gain a blue um instrument so I can fulfill his patron because a blue instrument is going to be slightly more specific than any color of jewelry. The cool thing is is my ability here is when I go there, I gain two reputation, which means I can do this action.

So I did get all three of that on there. So it's four science.
Um and then this one I wasn't able to get any uh there. So but I still got the max of the one. Okay. Now your blueberry tiles. So I'm going to get one prestige for my highest track which is going to be eight. Nice.

I was able to pull it out. Ultimately, pretty close cuz I mean, like again, like this is like one big expedition away and something like that. And then this was just like we both just kind of put more in there because
I wanted to. I just didn't have any relics.
Yeah, I had the relics to do it and I just chose to go a different direction and I'm like, ah, that could have been some good prestige there.
Well, my thing is like I kept having to get patrons to get money to go on expeditions, but then I was worried about losing like 15 points. So, I kept having to give my relics here as opposed to here cuz this whole last round I was like, "Okay, I'm going to get some stuff in here at the very least like finish this or finish this or something." And it just ended up not happening. And I was like, "Ah, it's more worth it for me to get one more science from this." And so,
