Description

Rediscover the Woodland with three brand-new factions and two new maps for Root!

Lilypad Diaspora
Scattered long ago and suppressed ever since, the Lilypad Diaspora now hopes to call the Woodland home. While they work to integrate peacefully, peace is rare in the midst of civil war. As they train their warriors, they must ensure that their desire for safety does not tip into outright aggression. With weapons at the ready, a simple misunderstanding between the Diaspora and the Woodland can flare into vicious reprisals, hardening the Diaspora’s militancy and spreading resentment against their cause.

Twilight Council
Sickened by the enduring conflict, the Twilight Council hosts assemblies to end the war, bringing together all the Woodland from the lowliest mouse-in-a-sack to the mightiest hawk with a royal claim. The assemblies emphasize political connections over pure numbers of warriors, pushing the factions away from bloody battle and toward heated debate. As the Council progresses in their mission, they can declare edicts to change how the assemblies work, manipulating their enemies’ incentives and actions.

Knaves of the Deepwood
Nobody really knows how the Knaves of the Deepwood got together, but the myths are many. From the treeline these miscreants and ne’er-do-wells sally forth, raiding barracks and baggage trains and making off with warriors in tow as hostages. Why? For ransom, that’s why. Some say they give the proceeds to the needy. Some say they spend it lavishly. Either way, their celebrations ring out through the night, the music swelling from the forest depths where few dare to go.

Pros
  • Factions are very good and unique.
  • The expansion brings in three new factions and two new maps.
  • The Naves of the Deepwood are an organized Vagabond.
  • The Twilight Council's mechanics of shutting down clearings are fascinating.
  • The Lily Pad Diaspora has a lot going on with them and is incredibly unique.
  • The marsh map adds interesting mechanics with blocking clearings and randomization.
  • Root is still a 10 out of 10 game.
  • The expansion comes with three new factions, more than usual.
  • The factions are good, even if they don't immediately compel a repeat play.
  • The expansion is not disappointing and is still good.
Cons
  • This expansion might be the weakest out of all the expansions.
  • The Naves of the Deepwood are described as the Vagabond on crack or steroids.
  • The Naves of the Deepwood inherently cut out an option by replacing the Vagabond.
  • The Naves of the Deepwood can become a public threat number one quickly.
  • The Twilight Council's reliance on RNG for victory points can be annoying.
  • It's odd that the Twilight Council relies on a random die roll for victory points.
  • The Lily Pad Diaspora has a duality where aggression means not getting points from passive abilities.
  • The Twilight Council and Lily Pad Diaspora feel like they were designed to be better with other factions.
  • Playing all three new factions together doesn't mesh well.
  • The expansion might be better if playing with not all of them at the same time.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Additional card deck — The Lily Pad Diaspora adds an additional deck of cards that players can draw from, containing dominance cards and cards for special abilities related to frog enclaves.
  • asymmetric factions — Root is an asymmetric wargame where every faction plays radically differently from one another.
  • Banish — The Twilight Council can banish opponents, ignoring hits taken and pushing people out, allowing for board maneuverability and negotiation.
  • Captains — The Naves of the Deepwood have captain cards that replace the Vagabond's unique abilities, acting as multiple Vagabonds with an overall goal of running around doing battles and using items.
  • Claim tokens — The Naves of the Deepwood use claim tokens to generate more, which can be removed, and they steal prisoners.
  • Clearing manipulation — The Lily Pad Diaspora has a unique aspect of manipulating clearing types, for example, turning a bunny clearing into a frog clearing, which can affect other factions' strategies.
  • Enclaves — The Lily Pad Diaspora has enclave tokens, either peaceful or militant, that affect clearings. Peaceful enclaves turn a clearing into a frog clearing.
  • Evening phase actions — The Twilight Council does all their actions in the evening phase, thematically tied to bats being nocturnal.
  • Governing assemblies — The Twilight Council places governing assemblies that prevent all actions except battle in a clearing, stopping crafting, flipping, placing, taking, or removing pieces.
  • Loyalists — The Twilight Council can gain loyalists by spending return cards. These loyalists can be used to defend assemblies or add to battle strength.
  • Militant vs. Peaceful — The Lily Pad Diaspora has a duality where militant enclaves involve attacking and removing units, while peaceful enclaves focus on generating points based on the number of peaceful icons.
  • Randomized map setup — The marsh map blocks certain clearings with tokens and randomizes the placement of clearings, lowering the total number of available clearings.
  • River travel — The Lily Pad Diaspora can use rivers as paths to clearings.
