Description

Strahd von Zarovich’s dinner invitation is one of the highlights of any Ravenloft game. It’s full of high drama, fear, and tension with ample opportunity for roleplay, character development, lore exploration, and story-telling invention. What it typically lacks though, is the unpredictable element of chance, the fortunate or unlucky roll of the die. While there have been attempts to inject game mechanics into the dinner itself, these usually come at the expense of interaction and feel artificial and out of place.

Shall We Dance offers up an alternative. This mini-game takes place after the dinner as an entertainment devised by Strahd to test your player's skill and ingenuity. It uses the mechanic of skill contests to determine outcomes but allows for clever players to give themselves additional advantage. It also has a story application with a recommended player goal and reward for participation.

Quotes (from this video)
  • We have 11 new games for you today. So if you haven't seen these episodes before, it's a mini review and also we decide whether to keep or call it out of the collection.
  • It's basically a ticket to ride eachish game where you will draft cards, but this time you have to draft two cards adjacent to each other or you will play cards to be able to build these little camps around the board.
  • The spatial puzzle in itself I didn't find very interesting.
  • It's a solid good game. I just don't need to to own it.
  • It was 40 minutes, four players and a lot of great gameplay. there.
  • And all in all, I would say that this is one of the better light games I played in a very long time.

  • It is one of the spiel de Jarus uh um nominees and we had not played it before.
  • It is so much fun.
  • We played it with three separate groups every time. We had plenty of laughs.
  • This has hit one of our top party games.
  • Jump Masters. This is a prototype copy, I believe, of a new game from Chip Theory Games. I actually don't know much about it, but I'm excited to try it out because Chip Theory produces some really high quality stuff.
  • So, by limiting the amount of space you have in a suitcase, you can limit the num the amount of money and games you bring home.
  • No, you have to. It has to be have six sides, but that's the only rule.
  • I didn't follow that rule when making my die.
  • Tyler made a ridiculous die because it's more fun that way. Don't try to make a regular dye.
  • Paddington, UKG was pretty amazing and honestly just the people along the way.
  • Not to not to be dramatic, but I think I would die for Paddington.
  • We saw the musical, not just the bear. We saw Paddington the musical, which was 10 out of 10.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And there's just this whole sense of community that follows these conventions around.
  • And so there's lots of game demos. Uh a lot of the hall is dedicated to just play space cuz it is playcon rather than shopcon I guess.
  • And I think one of these uh one of the things I like about, you know, conventions like Playcon is the fact that you can discover games that may not necessarily have appealed to you or you didn't really know about.
  • And Rosalie is all about tendering and building a rose garden and then deploying robots and your caretakers to go and look after those roses season after season.
  • It's just so good to be able to follow people's journeys in different ways.
  • Um, it was also good uh seeing um other designers that I'd seen in previous years.
  • And so, thank you to the team for being able to put on these conventions each and every year because, you know, it's with the world in the way that it is at the moment with all the negative things that are happening, we need some good positive fun in our lives.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is a simple filler card game by Sashi and Sashi that reminds me of my old old years ago dating days.
  • It's not a highly strategic or tactical game, and it's the kind of game you can play with people of any level of board game experience, gateway up to heavy.
  • When you've got a game where you're adding up majorities at the end, that always adds for a good sense of tension, and it gives you something to shoot for.

Pros
  • Fits well into the light filler category.
  • Can be played with people of any level of board game experience.
  • Easy to get into.
  • Resolving majorities at the end adds a good sense of tension and gives players something to shoot for.
Cons
  • Not a highly strategic or tactical game.
  • Need to watch for not over-investing in a given color, because of course that's all dead time.
Thematic elements
  • Matchmaking in a ballroom/dating context
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Hand Management — You have eight cards in your hand. Each turn, you must play between one and three of those cards to the table.
  • Majority — You get the points from your popularity, and you resolve majorities. Three points for whoever has the most cards of a given color, and one point for second.
  • Set Collection — A set-collecting card game with some twists.
  • Take That — If anyone else has the partner they need, you must take it from them. You now gain that couple again for its point, while the player you raided gets a point for popularity.
