Garden Lake - Tutorial & Playthrough
Transcript
phones are going on and we are live. Good afternoon everybody. Thank you very much for joining us for the first of a triple bill of live streams today. First, we're bringing you Garden Lake, which is a new u Rosenberg game being published by Albi. It's going to be coming out very soon. It's going to be released at Essen Spiel this year. Mark's joining me
and Cath and Stuart.
Hello.
And some of us have have played before, some of us haven't played before. So, this is going to be a full teach before we play. But this is a short game. This is not only a light game. No, it's probably a light game. I was calling it a super light game earlier, but I think actually it's just a light game because white, whilst the rules of this game might be relatively simple, there's going to be a lot of agonizing noises coming from us in the next half hour and sometimes wishing we had a pair of scissors because it's a polyomino game, but it's polyominos like you've never seen them before. They are all made up of seven individual squares because we are building a garden lake in Japan and the number seven is is very important. Hopefully the audio is all okay. Yes, thank you very much for letting me know. So, let's go through the theme of what we're doing. In a quiet valley, several masters of water garden design have gathered to compete in a prestigious contest, the water beauty symposium.
Their task is to create the perfect water feature, a harmonious lake where the surface glistens in the sunlight, and the koifish glide gracefully among the water lilies. The masts carefully arrange water tiles and connect groups of fish and plants to create a perfect balance between order and nature. Whoever manages to best fill their lake with both life and tranquility will emerge as the winner of this aesthetic challenge. So essentially what we're going to be doing is we are going to be placing these water tiles onto our player boards. Now each player starts with 16 water tiles taken out of the bag at random. There are a few left in the bag, but we have 16 of them. It is a one to four player game. There is a solo mode and we are going to be playing the basic game today. There is an advanced game which I will touch on at the end of the video. So you lay out these 16 water tiles. Now these water tiles, if you look, some of them have liies on, some of them have fish on, but actually they've both got the same. So they've both got fish on one side and they've got water liies on the other side. And when it is your turn, you may take one tile which is within reach. So, a tile is in within reach is if it's on either of the ends of the the line of tiles in front of you or I can take that one
hands off
and I can take that one. So, each player actually has access to four tiles in the game. And what you do is you take the tile and you put it on your board. Now, you can put the tile absolutely anywhere on your board. So, let's say I decide to take this one at the start of the game. I could put it there. Now, you can't put it there like that. You can't put it there. So, things like that, obviously. But you can put it there. You can put it that way up. You can put it there. You can put it wherever. And once I've put something on a space, my next tile could go over here. You don't have to place them so that they are connected together. Now, what you're trying to do in the game is you're trying to complete as much of this as possible because at the end of the game, you will get one point for every completed row and you will get one point for every completed column. And you're also going to get two points for every group of seven fish or sorry, seven or more fish and seven or more uh waterlies. So, what you're trying to do is you're trying to group these things together so that you actually get seven or more fish. Now, if you do have seven or more and then you add to that group with more and more fish, it's still only two points. So, you kind of want to be most efficient, you want groups of seven. If you have eight or nine, that's absolutely fine.
But if you have a group of six, no points. But the main thing is that whenever you take a tile, you can flip it over and you can put it wherever you want and you don't have to put them adjacent to each other. Now you will notice on these boards we have some preprinted spaces. So at any time in the game where you have covered one of these small sections here you get access to one of these bonus tiles. Now this is a one by one bonus tile which can be a water lily or it can be a fish and you can put it wherever you want. You can keep it as well. You can put it there. You can have at most one piece here. And if you manage to complete this shape here, this L shape, that unlocks one of these. And then you can place that on the board as well. How do you get these other shapes at the top and the left hand side? Well, once you have completed one of the columns in, you see these little red bits here. Once you've completed one of those columns, you get access to that. Once you've completed one of those columns, you get access to that. And once you've completed one of those columns, you get access to that. And the same with the rows. So, you need to be keeping an eye out. That is the trickiest part of the game is making sure you keep an eye out when you've covered these or you've completed a row or a column because that gets you these bonus tiles.
So, we need to pick a random player to start with. Um, how are we going to do that?
That's who most recently picked up a water.
Let's see. Let's see what the rules say. Let's see what the rules say. controversial take.
Um I don't know whether it says. Let's have a look.
I want to go last. I'm already feeling stressed.
Feeling stressed. You know, you're supposed to be tranquil.
I thought it was going to be like that. And then here
the player who most recently visited a Japanese garden. If nobody has visited the garden or players are not sure,
randomly choose. So, who's been to Japan?
Nope.
No.
Who's been anywhere near Japan?
I've been to Vietnam.
That's probably nearest. All right. Mark is the start player.
Oh no. All right.
So, what's going to happen is Mark's going to take a turn. Cat's going to take a turn. You're going to take a turn. I'm going to take a turn. We're just going to keep taking turns. When you can no longer take any turns, you're out, but everybody else carries on playing.
Okay. So, it isn't like you play to the end of the round or anything like that, but you know, you could finish and I could have three or four more turns. It's yeah, there is a special rule about what happens if you when you don't have two tiles in front of you, you take a new one from the back. But other than that, I think that is pretty much the rules of the game.
So, if I can't move, but then a tile comes available that
if if you currently can't place a tile because the four available to you, none of them will go, that's it. You're out.
Okay.
You can't come back in.
No second chance.
N well then.
Right. I'm going to make a controversial first turn.
I think I'm going to be safe on the first in the middle.
I don't know.
I know you were eyeing up that T.
I was eyeing up that piece.
Place that one.
Right. I'm going to put this one here.
Right. That one go in the corner there. So, I want that one. Do you want to put a B? Uh,
well, that's a terrible first tile. Um, I could take that one or I could take that one. I think I'm going to take this one. This one's all right. And I'm going to put it up here. Do I want to put it in the corner? I'm not sure about this actually based on putting it there means I'm kind of restricting myself with that.
So, I'm going to put it These tiles are horrible. Dear Mr. Rosenberg, I'm going to put it there. Okay, I think it's this one that there.
Oh, that's awkward. Oh, it's all really awkward.
And you can flip the tiles over, remember, from one side to the other, however you want.
Let's try this and find out why it's wrong later.
Okay.
Right. This one looks like it goes nicely there.
If you complete column four, do you get bonus tile? Do you get both bonus tiles? No. Column four is just So if you complete column four, it's just that one. So this this bonus tile here is for any of these four columns. This is for any of these four columns. And this is for any of these four columns.
Okay. So I've got these two, that one, all that one. If you could take that one, that'd be great.
I might take that one cuz I don't want that one. Oh, then again.
Oh, so if I've completed a square then
you have completed a square. So you immediately get that. You can place it or you can keep it in this area and place it later on if you want to.
Is that an additional or I take that instead of one of those?
Additional.
So
yeah, you might as well keep it for now.
Yeah.
Um
can we look are they
You can flip it over. They're in exactly the same place. You're allowed to take a tile, flip it around, do stuff with it, and see see what you want to do.
That's all right.
Um,
for a minute I was thinking, are they going to be in different places? And you can't see how to flip.
One side is li and one side of fish.
Yeah. I'm glad they didn't put them.
Makes sense.
Which means you're fine. I'll put it like when I flip it over that works. Maybe sure you mix in liies with your fishes.
We teach tolerance and gonna
Is it?
Yeah, it's fine. You just did it without him looking.
Well, yeah, but it doesn't doesn't matter. My liies do there. It's all about the liies. Maybe I'll do some fish. Just do a bit of fishing.
It's all about the cones. I mean the liies.
So I get one of those. No, I'll put it there.
Oh yeah, that's the thing I've been keeping an eye on is
covering up the shapes.
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to do them early cuz these ones are really useful late.
I like the look of that, but I'm going to have a horrible
Well, that's a really bad idea. Those can never connect to each other.
No.
Oops.
I'm going to do it anyway.
That's a future problem. Okay. Well, that's the one I need. And I'm glad nobody else took it. When I say nobody else, I mean Mark. But I'm going to put that in there.
Just covered up that square. So I get this.
I'm trying to take time.
But I'm just going to put it.
Oh, but now you got a fish on it own.
That's fine. One fish on its own. A less. Right. thinking about does it work? No. White.
Is everyone still connecting all their pieces? They are.
I am.
But you don't need to. You can put You can put anything anywhere.
There's not really any nice edge pieces. But that's a nice edge piece, but later makes it worse. I remember this. Almost there. Does your piece help
that one?
No.
Nope.
Starting on the sides already.
Told you.
Yeah, the pain has begun.
Just take something and pop it somewhere else.
Yeah, I mean that might be the thing to do. Maybe it's time to connect those up. And once you've played it a couple of times, you can actually start thinking about Yeah. the next piece.
Now,
how far do you do you norally get you bored and how I just played?
Yeah, mostly.
Okay.
It gets really hard because of this the shape of the pieces. So, in a lot of polyomino games, you leave a bit of a space and you think that's fine. I'll fill that later. Not in this game
because of these
quite big.
Yeah, they're quite big.
Well, that's kind of why these are so important.
Yeah. That's why. Yeah, the little bits to fill the gaps. Well, nobody took that one. That's going in there.
You're not doing that job.
There you go. Right. Got away with it. Still need something to go in here. Well, I don't, but maybe I will. That's playing fire. Oh, it could work. Could work. Oh, wait. No. Almost making the same mistake as last time. This has gone badly.
You going starting in the middle.
Where did I just take this from? That was
Yeah, you can't take it.
Can't take that one. I was trying to think ahead and then I just confused myself instead. Oh yeah, there we go.
Okay,
that piece of
That's a group of seven fish.
It is a group of seven fish.
And you've covered up your middle space.
Covered up my middle space. That thing I said I needed to try not to forget. I immediately forgot.
Uh let's put it in reserve.
Okay.
Oh, our bonus tile. So, that can be placed at any time.
Pretty much anytime. Yeah.
Then you can place multiple ones. And if you get another bonus tile, but you decide you want to keep that one, that's fine. You can keep that one and place the new one, or you can place that one.
Basically, as long as you've only got one here, that's fine.
See, that would be good if it was fit. Lily pads. This one doesn't fit there. All right. I think I'll go somewhere else.
Just do that.
Does it fit? It does.
It does fit. I want to work out whether I want It has to be that way around. It doesn't work the other way around. Unless I do fishes that way. Shape. Shapes are hard.
Okay. Yeah, these get very stressful very quickly.
Play a nice little game about liies.
Yeah,
it will be lovely.
It will be lovely, they said.
Um, it's time to regret this decision. Maybe I should have kept everything together.
Let's just I'm just going to have a quick look at this. I don't think I don't think it's the tile that I I'm looking
the tile you're looking for.
I don't think it is. This one might be.
No, I don't think so.
Cuz that that's quite nice. Although
is tell although I'm not sure. I'm going to do that. One, two, three, four, five, six. I just need one more in there. Easy peasy. I'm just going to test this towel. Mhm.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay. I
think
No.
Yes. Unfortunately, I don't want fish showing.
So, if I then it doesn't work.
But then it just fits in so nicely.
Fit in so nicely.
I think that's a terrible idea. Just a little fish
with the lily pads.
My cat has just entered the room in with all of the talk of fish.
Yeah.
All right, Loki.
Hello.
Thank you very much. Perfect.
So, I can take none is appearing. I'm sorry.
Oh, why did I take that one? So, it's going to have to be that because there's the the group. Yep, that's it. That'll do. Okay. Anita is asking if the game is available on board Game Marina. It's not. No, the game is not available on Board Game Marina.
Just Just no.
That looks like a nice piece.
It is a very nice piece. Come here, Loki. Come on. You go, Mark.
Yes, I got distracted by Loki.
Oh, no. I've just been through that. No, that's not that could go out there. And then maybe some work later. And some more fishes here.
No, that seems like a bad idea.
I may be stealing that one.
Oh, okay.
Right. That one was there was better.
No. Oh, hang on.
I'm leaving spaces already. You're eyeing up this one, are you?
Yes.
No.
No, it doesn't. Oh, what a shame.
I'll have that. Okay, let's do not very pleasant, but I'll do that and place this one here.
Okay. Which gets you another one.
Another one, which is probably going to go in there at some point.
Do that later on.
Yeah.
Right. If I place that there, I'm just leaving loads of gaps. Like the gaps are bad things.
Don't worry. Yeah, you will. I'm hoping I'm put this one here. Now I've got a group of seven.
Nice.
Well, it's more than seven. Eight.
Nobody's completed a column or row yet, have they?
Oh, yeah. Getting close.
Oh, for that one.
Yep. Okay. And I'm going to take that one.
Oh, I see you've got lots of gaps. I see what you mean.
So, I've now completed the L shape there. It's all right. Gap
gets me this. But I can't have both of these. So I'm going to turn that one into fishes there. Okay, it's me.
If I place there, that pops that off. Does this one work? Not those scissors we talked about.
Yeah, they're not included in the game. They're they're a stretch go.
Variant rules for scissors.
Scissors and cellar tape. It's a legacy game.
It's no better. Stupid consequences to my actions. No. Uh, where did I take that? Oh dear, I have made some errors.
Don't like it for the gaps, but it does make a group of us.
Yeah, we've all got gaps apart from Paul. I'm going to end up with some big gaps later. But
right, this one looks like it goes in nicely with all the
Does that more gaps and I get one of these tiles which I'm going to put there for now.
I lined up that one. Oh dear.
That's good.
You feel like you made the right decision there. Made someone upset.
Not good. That's not going to be good.
I didn't learn from last game. These are all very similar to mistake mistakes last time. It Oh,
may not take it.
He might not take it. He might not take it. No,
that's terrible, Stuart. No, you don't want to do that. No,
that's terrible. But it might that's also bad. He's been number one on that side.
Oh, going there.
Right. Okay. So, I need to change the plan.
Um due to other players I can
That's not going to help. Is that going to help? I mean, that's a nice piece. So, I think it's easy to place, which is why it's only got one lily on it.
Mhm.
Or a fish. That would give me seven. Okay. So,
how am I going to do this? Right. So, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to take this and I'm going to put it there. So, that does two things. I have completed another square. So I get that. And I've also completed that row. So I get that. And then I need to place these. So I'm going to place uh this one here as fishes, which has completed that column, which gets me this, which I'm going to put there as fishes. And then I've still got two of these. So, I need to place one of these, which I will put
I'm going to put there as a fish. Okay. Yeah, I think I'm happy with that. That's not a bad turn. And yes, I'm I'm the same, Anita. leaving leaving gaps makes me feel uncomfortable, but I think in this game it is just one of those games where you're going to have to. But as I said, as you can see in here, this is what these little pieces are for is is for trying to plug those gaps, but just because of the the weird shapes, um you're going to end up with some gaps.
That one there.
Right, this one fits nicely here, but my liies are going to be on their own, I think. No,
just going to have to go there.
Oh, I see. It's only one of them that's on their own.
Yeah, that's right. I've got this one here. I've just had to back the fancy edition with the scissors. Nice.
I'm running out of pieces. That means people must have been taking mine more than than others. Yeah,
Steuart's got more than anyone.
No one likes mine. Nobody likes pieces. Just get up here except for
Are we going back to taking Paul's pieces out of its think if these were No, it wouldn't work then.
And again, if you think this is a bit too simple, it is a light game. We'll mention the advanced rules at the end, which I've not played yet, but
they do make it a bit trickier.
I think cause problems by having a straight line there. Take that one. My liies don't match up.
Hey, wait. That was my piece.
That's probably not going on.
That's tense. Yeah, was.
Yeah, I know. Lo, it's very cheap.
Coming back in, Loki.
Want some more of that chicken?
Fish.
Want some koiish?
Right. Probably quite bad, but I'm done.
Oh. Oh, dear. Back to me. That's just look at all these fish. Look at these fish in the pond. And back to you. I mean, it's quite nice. Does help me complete that bottom row and fill stuff in. But
what piece have you got? That one. That good. That's good. I like that. I'm going to put that there. It's messing up my liies, man. But um do I want to place this? No, I'm fine.
We are being observed right think only there was a fish there actually it's fine flight complete.
Groaning is indeed.
I've already forgotten why I took this piece for No, because that was the one I was hang up there, I think. Yeah, cuz I didn't have access. Low key, can you find me a better piece?
Goes off and gets a piece for Roden.
Oh, yeah. That looks nice. That works.
You found a piece.
Yeah. Good job, Loki.
Well done. You
like given up on fish and liies. I'm just like, "Right, let's try and get some pieces that fit." Right.
It's it's it's an interesting combination of trying to complete the rows and the columns, but also trying to complete the groups,
right? So, I've got that one there.
Idea of doing both column, right? And if I put this one here, I'll put it here. This column.
Okay. Got to place one of those bonus tiles.
Yeah.
Oh, drooling. Wrong side. You're drooling. It's happy.
Yeah, it's very happy.
Yes.
So, I put this one here.
Mhm.
And now there's an L shape under L shape. Nice.
So, I'm going to put my liies down there. Although,
yeah, I agree, James.
Loki expansion.
I think Loki agrees. When Loki appears, current player skips their turn.
I'll just put that one.
You don't normally say
I think that's everything.
You sure you know what?
You completed another Oh, you completed that color as well. I guess it doesn't matter either way. It's either adding to fish or to add to
too many liies. Yeah,
it's hard, isn't it? Well, no. Actually, if you flip that to lilies,
then
because it's not orthogonally connected to the other lilies, it could potentially make another group of seven. That's true.
These ones.
Yeah,
I'm eyeing up a piece to go here.
All right. Okay.
I suppose that's maximizing in case it doesn't work.
You might as well because the fish are already seven.
Yeah,
stealing my pieces.
Yep.
So, I'm almost at the point where I don't have two pieces. So, if I was to take one of these two, then immediately I would draw a new tile out of the bag and then I would choose whether it went to the left or the right. Well, you've left me with this. Look at that.
No, no.
Oh, it's got to be done, hasn't it?
Oh, beautiful yet. No, no, no.
So, I have to take another one from the bank. and cure. And I'm going to place this. Let's put it to the left. Right now then, do I want to place this? What have I have I completed anything here? No, I haven't. But if I put that, I will complete that, which will get me that, which will complete that. Or I could put that there. Oh, right. I'm going to wait. I got lots of options, but I'm going to wait for now. Loki's cat hair. Okay, I'm going to check if this does cascade. However, I think I want to do that.
Yeah, the staircase pieces are really nice if you can get two of them like lined up.
So, that this column
you've done a column row row.
So, I will then get this. It doesn't really matter which way this goes. Actually, no. I might save that. So I might have that here. No, because I want that piece. That fish, which gets me the three piece, which goes here, except goes that way.
I missed a bit.
I've covered up an L. Always always forget something.
Yeah.
So I'll just quickly take that, put it I think I've Yeah, I've got another one of these now. Oh my.
I'm going to put it there. Uh, no, I'll put it there.
Okay. Well, in that case, here I probably put that.
You completed another room for that one.
Oh god. I've also got one of these that I've missed. that I don't know when I missed getting this, but I I should only have two squares. It is one of the things with the game, you do have to keep an eye out for it, and getting distracted by cat is makes things difficult. So, I'm going to put that uh I'll just put it there,
which get you another one.
Oh, which gets me another one. Uh I'll just put it up there. Okay. Right now we're done.
Right. This is the piece I was planning for. It doesn't match anything up together, but it goes so nicely.
Fits very nice.
So, what does that get you? That gets you another square.
Square and an L
and an L. So, you've got two pieces that you need to place,
but no rose, right? I'm going to put this one up here to complete this.
I can guess that was going there.
Then my L doesn't like to go anywhere. Oh, liies. There's three liies there. much of these,
you know, you had your go.
Yep. Done.
Right. That's me. What's that? Is that any good?
Almost. No. Uh, what about this? Is this any good? I mean, yeah, I'll put it there. So that completes that column which unlocks this.
And I'm going to just keep that. And then I'm going to put that uh there. Yeah. Okay. Damn it. Going to get to the point soon where we are not going to be able to place any pieces. That's almost really good, but it's the wrong type.
There's six there. Does it work? Yeah.
This has taken it.
Yeah, I think I get a replacement.
Are you done?
Yes.
Right. This one would have been really good at the start of the game.
Put that there.
Nice.
Okay. It's not going to fit anywhere for me. Don't think no just stick in there which does complete just a single piece
there. I think that will complete a line there. That completes another thing. Oh man, combos.
Yep. Chaining things off. So you should have three L's left and two single squares left.
Single.
Yeah. So, we're in there.
Need something up here, but I don't know yet where it's going.
Have you placed your
I haven't just that one, which like I could fill these gaps, but it might be better.
Remember, every completed row and column is a point.
So, the more of those you do,
the more points you get.
But these ones definitely always have some kind of lily or fish on them. Yes. too good for getting a sevens up. Definitely put a two in there. Uh maybe we just three would fit in there. Maybe too many
might be okay. Hold on.
Yeah,
you have completed column number four. You get that?
Ah, okay. When did I do that one?
Probably maybe just now.
And that one was going there fish. I bet I need more fish in there.
Is that not quite enough?
Nope. No, I got it stuck. Quick, get the JCBs in.
Lots of fishies.
Right. There we go.
Right. And that was completed.
Done. That one. Fine.
Yeah. Right. I'm going to take that, put it in there. So, that has completed that row, which gets me this. No, hang on a minute. Hang on a minute. If I do that, I can never do that. Don't like that. Don't like that. Right. Change of plan. Um, I put this No, how am I going to complete that with what I've got? Can't Stewart style.
No, I don't think so. It's It's I mean, okay. Yeah, actually it does. Thank you. I'll just uh there.
Yeah, I'll do that. There you go. You want it?
I may have launched it cuz that does fit quite perfectly in there. That then gets me a three. And that goes right here.
Nice.
Okay.
Right.
This is going to be a problem. Don't know whether that one's better. This one's better.
It's really going to be a problem.
Yeah, I need to fill that in to get that to put it in there to get that. Yeah,
I think I'm fill that. So, I get one of those. One of those. I put some here. That S1 kit has to go in here. It doesn't matter what it is.
No, it's not connected.
I'll get that off. Go in there.
Oh, it's a horrible shape, haven't you?
What's available?
Oh, not too bad. I hate all
I hate all the pieces. What's this nonsense? Oh, that's actually quite good. Let's have that. So, that goes there. Hey, one, two, three, four, five, six. Yeah. So, that goes there. That's completed an L. That gets this. I flip that over to there. That goes in there. That completes this. And then, so I'm never going to be able to complete that. Oh, I've also done this. So, I've got all of these to place now. And I've also done that. So, I've got that to place as well, right? I got loads of things to place.
So, what are we going to place? Well, gosh. Um, don't know. I really want to keep more of these because of what shape's going to be coming up next, but I don't know which ones of these are still going to be there when it's going to be my turn. So, I'm just going to put that in there. I'm just going to put that in there. And I'm going to put that there in the hope that one of those two pieces is still there when it's my turn. So, yeah, we're getting close to the end now. I've not unlocked anything else by doing that, have I? No.
Oh, that's nice. No gaps.
Yeah, that's looking very neat and tidy.
Let's pop that.
Well, it depends what's here though, isn't it? Cuz it doesn't matter.
Can you have another one? Mark got your second one. Um, he's not. All right. Um, I'm not giving myself a lot of options here.
You can place a piece, can't you? Yeah.
Oh, well, so you've only got
Did you take one of Cath's?
Yeah.
Yeah. Right. So, I can choose it goes.
You can choose whether it goes to the left or the right. Yeah.
Okay.
I want it. And then of course if you want it, you take another one.
That doesn't finish the lilies. It gives me a six.
But you've got your L.
Oh yeah, cuz I put the L there.
Okay. That's right. I don't completely rose.
And so I take another one. Take another one straight away. Yeah. And oh, so I can see where the you may want what I've got my hand.
Nope.
That
it's not good for you either.
Which has completed an L.
Okay,
which all swap those. Let's keep the L single one in. You're right, Chrissy. Thank you. I do get this.
Did you miss one? You missed one.
Well spotted.
We got one. Two left. Yeah. One, two.
Uh. Oh, wait. No, that one's not done yet.
You all good? All good.
Right. I'm going to put that there. Um, that doesn't do anything. But I'm then going to put that there, which does complete that, which gets this. And I'm not going to place that yet.
Oh, that was made for there.
Oh, nice. She gets this And this is no good for me.
And this.
Yeah. And that. Pretty sure that there. Almost done. In fact, you are pretty much done, aren't you? There's problems with this. Hang on a minute.
Pretty impressive.
Rather than doing that,
just put that there.
And then if I do,
I've got that as well. Actually, haven't.
You have? Yeah.
Lots of bonus pieces to place.
Yeah. There you go.
Some iron out.
Look at that.
Oh, nice.
Wow.
Why have I got this?
Why have you got that?
He just filled it just now.
Just filled it. There you go. Wow. I was going to say, has anybody managed to complete their board? And despite his complaining,
he's been able to finish his board. That's going to be an impressive score. Right, Cath?
So, Mark's out.
Yeah, I haven't. I'm not.
Yeah, I'm not going to be able to do that.
No, this one doesn't really
play count is 1 to four. There is a solo mode.
I don't think there
I believe we can still take your tiles.
That would seem fair. I don't like those pieces. Yeah, cuz I'm going to I could do that there. That there.
Wait, wait. I put that there.
I never expected that to happen.
No, I don't want that piece of stuff.
I think I'm just going to take this. Put it here.
Okay. But I need to be able to complete that row, don't I? To get that,
which should be fine. Put that there to get that. Put that there.
So when Mark's other pieces
I'm I'm going to say I'm not 100% sure, but I'm going to say that Mark still takes
Yeah, I would I would think
it gives you a choice.
Is that you only replenish on your turn?
Immediately.
Immediately.
But then you you need to replenish all of the tiles. I don't. This is
water lily on one side and it all matter
in the same orientation,
right?
I mean, if you want it, put it there cuz I can't take it.
I think that fits on my board. Whether I want it or not, it fits.
Good. Okay. Uh, let's get there. So, that completes a line. Get the two and a single one of these.
And I'll put this one in here. which gets your final single piece.
Uh, yeah. And then just stick it open. Yeah. Finish that.
The tricky thing about flipping
L though
is you may have the perfect shape to go somewhere, but then you flip it over
and the thread
and it turns into the wrong thing
to the wrong type of feature
and then you curse the tiles.
Where am I going to put there? Get me another one. And that one.
This one doesn't actually hit.
I'm going to take this.
I should have flipped them differently.
There was a way it would go, which was there. But that Oh, no. Cuz then that can't complete that.
Oh, blasted tile.
Yeah. Off rats. Could that one
Oh,
yeah. But then
could that one?
I don't know.
You've moved it over the other way and
No,
rotation. No, it's big.
No. Oh,
I've got simulation.
Well, at least you can place that one.
I mean, I can, but I don't want to.
Placing it means that's it and I can I can't complete anything else. So, it's all gone a bit wrong. It's my fault for putting that one there. Okay, that's all I can do.
Oh, that one came out as well.
All I can do is that there
and then I've got this.
I tell you what, um I don't think it makes any difference. If I place that instead and then I have to pass, it doesn't make any difference because I'm still completing a row. It just feels horrible passing with this.
Yeah.
So, you're out. I'm out.
Right. I think this goes here.
Yes. The game ends for that person. Everybody Everybody ends the game on their own time.
Goes here.
So, me and Mark are out.
Sh out as well. So, it's just
Oh, it will be on my bonuses.
Oh, but I can I'm doing the same as you Paul. I can't put all three down.
Yeah.
Right. So, if I put this here,
that does
that locks that one,
right? And do I want a one? Oh, I do because I put that there's always one which is there. And I haven't got my L or my three. So, nearly there. So, put that there.
I've got this one as well. Oh, where did I get that one?
Oh, they're all the wrong shape. Yeah, that sounds like polymer games.
Yeah, put
that there. And
there you go. You're done. Right. So, let's add up the scores. One point for every completed column and one point for every completed row. So, for you, that's easy.
That's 24.
Yeah.
12. Yours is 21, I think.
This is minus two miles. Sorry.
16.
All the faces.
Yeah. It's terrible.
Terrible.
21. 21.
So, 22 21 16.
No. No. 19. Count those two.
90. Uh, and then two points for every group of seven or more water lilies or fish. So, for example, I have a group of seven fish here. So, that's two points. I have a group of at least seven water lilies. That's two points. group of seven fish here. That's two points. This is a group of seven fish. That's two points. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Yeah, that's a group there. And that's a group there. So, I've got one, two, three, four, five, six groups. So, I believe I have six groups, which is 12 points plus my 16 is 28.
I've got seven groups. So that's my last I get 38.
38.
I got five groups. I got 31.
I got five groups. So what was our 1929?
There you go. So the moral of the story is the garden builder who complains the most wins the game. Well done. Very impressive. Very impressive. Now I did say uh yeah the first player I don't think matters whatsoever because everybody just carries on playing. I did say very quickly before we finish that I will mention the advance rules. So, you can play the advanced rules with either just this side of the board like it is, or you could play with a different side of the board, which is this one, which means you have fewer of these bonus tiles. Now, you could also play with decorations. Now, you can play with decorations with this side of the board, which has the preprinted decorations, or you could actually play decorations with no preprinted decorations. I'll explain how it works with these. So, what happens is if I manage to surround one of these decoration spaces on all of the orthogonally adjacent sides, doesn't have to be the the diagonally adjacent side, then I take out of the bag the corresponding shape, which I believe is this one. So, this is a decoration. Some decorations are actually really nice pieces. And basically what that happens is if a group of fish or water lilies is next to this decoration at the end of the game, it's worth four points instead of two.
And it can happen that you end up with two decorations on the board and then you have a group of seven uh waterlies, whatever like that.
Uh and that group instead of it being worth two points is actually worth six points because it's worth an extra two because it's next to this and then another extra two because it's next to this. So yes, you can get each decoration makes each group worth an extra two points. It just gives you something else to consider. And if you're not playing with a board with preprinted decorations on, then I believe that anytime it's your turn, instead of taking one of your tiles, you can choose to take any decoration from the supply and put it anywhere on your board as long as it's not next to another decoration. But by doing that, yeah, it's different because you you're not getting the group. You're going to have fewer groups, but it means your groups are going to be worth more points
and you don't have to make it a place for it to be surrounded like the other board for that.
Uh, that's a good question.
So, you can place it anywhere, but it still has to be.
So, for this variant, use the lakesides with B. Instead of taking a water tile, you may place a decoration from the common supply. Can be placed on any empty space of the board except those adjacent to another decoration. You may not have more than three decorations. And you can now have two identical decoration shapes. Yeah. So you don't you don't have to surround it. You just
you just get it. But on that side of the board,
it's kind of like a free thing when you do surround it,
but it really restricts you. Now you don't h you can build over these as normal. And if you do build over it, then you're just saying I'm not going to get that decoration.
But anyway, that's that's it. That is Garden Lake. Probably plays in about 30 minutes once you know how to play the game. Thank you very much, G3, for joining me this afternoon. Thank you very much for watching. The game will be available from Albi at Essenfield this year and available through whatever retailer. Just check with your local retailer to see when they're getting the copies in. Uh but that's it. We will be back in about five or 10 minutes with another playthrough, second one of today. We'll see you then. Cheers everybody. Bye-bye.
Heat. Heat.
