Pros
- More control over the game and how you react to it.
- Character abilities are far more dynamic and cinematic.
- Gear cards are more layered and interesting, offering more strategic avenues.
Cons
- Not just fiddly, but finicky compared to other games in the series.
- Doesn't have the same level of strategic purity and thematic resonance as Forbidden Desert.
Thematic elements
- Alien bugs that start as eggs and hatchlings, then become squid alien things
Comparison games
- Forbidden Sky
- Forbidden Island
- Forbidden Desert
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
- action selection — You take four actions.
- asymmetrical player powers — you have a special power that you and only you are able to do.
- cooperative play — If players manage to do this before you are completely overrun, then you win.
- Modular board — you are then going to shift the board around using machinery that's also found on the reverse side of these tiles that do everything from manipulate where the hatchlings and adult aliens are to moving tiles around to removing whole tiles from existence and everything on it.
- Navigating a map — you are navigating a map.
- tile flipping — you are trying to flip over tiles to uncover the four powered crystals out of the six that are identified on the back of the tiles that are necessary to power a portal

Quotes (from this video)
- Recently on the podcast, I had the opportunity to talk about the Forbidden series and shamefully admit that I had not yet gotten to the table, let alone got a copy of Forbidden Jungle, the latest tin box in this series, which was kind of heralded as a bit of a return to form.
- So, Forbidden Jungle is much like the rest of the series in that you are navigating a map. You take four actions, you have a special power that you and only you are able to do, and then bad stuff happens.
- Unlike the other Forbidden games, the main adversary that you're facing isn't the environment itself, but it's actually these alien bugs that initially start as eggs and then become hatchlings.
- As a fan of this series, I would say that what is the biggest hurdle to overcome with Forbidden Jungle is that it's not just fiddly, but it's finicky compared to the other games in the series.
- But the flip side of that is you have more control over the game and how you react to it.
- Personally, I find that really exciting and fascinating.
- It doesn't have the same level of strategic purity and thematic resonance as what I consider the best in the series Forbidden Desert, but if this is where the series is continuing to go, or even if this is the last entry in the series, it feels like a worthy successor to go along with Desert and Island.

- explore — flip face-down jungle tiles to reveal and rotate; draw equipment if a cog token is on the tile; equipment can be discarded for effects
- Move — move one space to an orthogonally adjacent tile; cannot move through empty spaces or webs; tunnels may modify movement
- operate — activate machines (portal, configurator, compeller, destruct switch) to progress or alter the board; win condition involves operating a portal with all players and functioning crystals
- remove — remove tiles or pieces from the board; can remove tiles without players on them; may return enemy pieces to supply
- tile configurator — move a single tile any number of steps in a single direction; must end adjacent to another tile; can disconnect others; webs on moving tile are destroyed
- Tile/Map Shifting — move a single tile any number of steps in a single direction; must end adjacent to another tile; can disconnect others; webs on moving tile are destroyed

Quotes (from this video)
- players will work together to find a portal, find four functioning crystals, and find the special Jungle configurators which will let them slide the jungle around like a slide puzzle
- There is only one way to win the game and that is for a player to take and operate machine action on a portal with all players present and with an active Crystal on all four sides of the portal do this and you'll escape the jungle and win the game
- you can discard this equipment at any time be it your turn or another players to resolve its positive effect and it will not cost you an action to do so
