Transcript
Hi everybody, I'm Zilla Blitz, and welcome to Game of the Month for August 2026. This is the video where I look back on the previous month's gaming experiences, be they PC games, war games, tabletop board games, pick out my three favorite games or gaming experiences, and then from those three pick out one winner for Game of the Month. Let's jump right in and get started with our first candidate, Rebels Against Rebellion from Flying Pig Games. This game is set in 1861. Basically, Tennessee secedes from the Union, and then Scott County, a single county within Tennessee, secedes from the Confederacy. And what follows is 2 years of raids and battles between the surrounded Scott County and the Confederate forces all around it. This game does a fabulous job of telling the history and the recreating the tension of this battle and this confrontation.
It has a fantastic historical guide inside of it. Now, I've played it solitaire. It's a one or two player game. I've played the solitaire game four or five times. I've yet to win. It is really hard and challenging. I've also played the two-player is really, I think, fantastic, tense, and exciting game. Really enjoyed the time I've spent with this one. It's got card play, deck building, a lot of different great elements of gameplay. Designed by Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson, two, of course, stars in our hobby. Been really enjoying Rebels Against Rebellion, playing it pretty much throughout the month of August. The second game caught me completely by surprise. I had no expectations about this game, but I've absolutely fallen in love with it. Zombicide second edition. This is a tactical combat game for one or four or five players. I'm not sure of the max player count there. Where you're trying to basically collaborate and work your way across an urban battlefield, clearing zombies, finding weapons, exploring places, breaking down doors, and fighting the zombies that are in there. It's intense, fast, easy tactical combat for when you want something simple. As a fan of tactical combat games, I found that I really like the immediacy of of this one. I mean, it's two turns and you're killing zombies and looking for weapons and trying to survive. Now, we've played a couple times on Board Game Arena and we've done pretty horribly, but we're getting better and I am looking forward to finally winning one of these games, but I'm a big fan of tactical combat and this one is a real winner.
Game number three, I do have a box for Sensuikan for Compass Games. In this game, set in World War II, it's a solitaire game. You take the role of a commander of a Japanese submarine and try to lead it through a series of missions in World War II. The missions could be easy, they could be hard, you could have disaster strike, all sorts of things can happen. And if you are a long-time follower of the channel, you know that I love games that spin narrative and I love the games that are the other entrance into the series, things like The Hunters, Silent Victory, Raiders of the Deep. Basically, games that put you in charge of a vehicle like a tank or a submarine and let you fight your way through the entire war. Some campaigns can be two patrols and then you're knocked out and dead and other patrols can be other campaigns can be months or even the entire length of the war. You just never know what the story is going to be.
Why do I like this one? This one in particular, I think does a really good job of capturing the essence of being a Japanese commander in the war. So, a lot of cultural nuances and about Japanese submarines, the events there and the role of Japanese submarines in the war. So, I've been really enjoying my time with Sensuikan in August. And time for our winner. I This is a very close month. Some months it's like I have a clear choice. This was very hard. I think I could have gone with either of these three any of these three choices, it would have been a good pick. But, I do have one that slightly nudged out ahead of the rest. The winner for this month is Sensuikan from Compass Games. Um, why in particular this game? Well, I I'm a big fan of this series, but what I really like about what they've done with Sensuikan compared to the other games in the series is again that that Japanese cultural nuance. And by this I mean Japanese submarines were often equipped with scout planes. So you have roles for the scout planes in these patrols that you're going on. They also had Kaiten suicide torpedoes, and those are built into the game. You could have a submarine that has a submarine attached to it. That's built into the game. Plus you have a lot of the World War II historical events that your submarine could be part of and have a special role in those events. So I think they've done a really good job of distinguishing this game from a cultural and a military perspective from what it was like, for example, to be a U-boat commander in the Atlantic or to be a commander of a US submarine or be a commander in World War I. So I think this is really a shining example in this
series. And I played played a bunch of practice missions and then I'm jumping in now into a mini campaign on the channel. Having so much fun with this one. It's just reminded me of why I love one of the reasons why I like games is the stories they generate. And I feel like these, although they can be decision light, they generate such fun stories. It's just an easy game to jump into and play, and it just it's a treat. Every mission could be completely different. Every patrol tells a different story. Really have a lot of fun with this one. Our game of the month for September 20 for August 2026, Sensuikan from Compass Games.
